radio & speakers

Post by pistol grip » Tue Nov 14, 2006 4:52 pm

Hi guys I have a couple of questions regarding radio and speakers.

1. When I got my GTX I notice that where my speakers should go there are no holes or any indication of a patern what so ever, is just a flat black cover, but I have 2 spakers mounted inside my trunk. Can any one send me pictures of the way it should look from the insde.

2. Should I put a new CD player in my glove box? (keeping my original radio intact)

3. Would this devaluate my car?

Thank for your help, Steve

Rear speakers

Post by CtownRunner » Tue Nov 14, 2006 8:49 pm

It sounds like your package shelf is without the cutouts. You can buy them with or without.

I bought a new package shelf cardboard piece with the perforated cutouts. Then I placed my rear 6x9 speakers underneath with locking washers and screws. Then I placed the new package shelf on the rear deck and nothing shows.

You may be able to flush mount the 6x9 from the top it the cone edges are not to tall. Then put the package shelf with the perforations back on.

My old set up was the plain cardboard package shelf and previous owner had just cut them dropped in the speakers and put plastic speaker grill covers over them. Looked like crap.

Package tray w/speaker grill cutouts

Post by CtownRunner » Thu Nov 16, 2006 12:07 am

Try Legendary or the Paddock or Year One

Legandary without speaker grill cutouts pt71crwx(c)n $26
with speaker grill cutouts pt71crwx(c)w $41
jute insulation pt71crwxj $10

The cutouts referred to are rectangular perforations that allow the sound to pass into the cabin. Not an oval that is punched out to mount the speaker through.

I took my old radio (am/fm) and had it upgraded to new internals. It looks stock, but now I have the EQ, in trunk cd, amp and sub with 2 6x9's out back and 2 4x2's under the dash. The rub is it cost about $1300 to do.

You must have a remote for the CD player? That sounds like a nice set-up.

Yup, the hard wire control, and then the wireless- which i don't use too often. It fits my theme of "look stock, perform better". Gott have killer tunes- that 2watt stock radio just wasn't gitin it done.

Whats the problem? put it in the glove box, sounds like a good idea to me.Don't worry about cutting up the glove box as originals and repros are easy to get.

idk if anybody else thought of this, but what i did was make a cradle-like console to hold my cdplayer and it bolts under the dash like an 8 track r somethin back in the day...it's pretty good set-up, no remote needed and the buttons are really easy to push

Personaly I wouldn't like to drill holes under my dash even though it might look very old school-1971 people would know that is not original to the car, If I had another classic in so so conditions, something that I didn't care too much about, I think it would be a GREAT IDEA!

actually, there were already holes drilled under the dash...idk if they were factory for accessories, or if at sometime somebody had one of those little add-on gauge clusters there, but no drilling, just built the console and slipped in a couple bolts and bam--done
