Conflicting info it seems:
The factory service manual electrical diagrams show that the remote trunk lid release is electrically operated. In fact, my trunk latch has an actuator attached to it which has a single wire pigtail. There is a mating connector on a black wire which runs along the driver side interior up thru the kick panel to the dash. Haven't yet traced it any farther. I have a push button switch inside the glove box.
The factory operator's manual says that the remote trunk release is vacuum operated. In fact, there is a hose, presumably vacuum, in the trunk, and terminated with a plastic tee. It's not long enough to reach the trunk latch.
Obviously mine isn't working.
Anyone know the real info here - electrical, vacuum, or a combination of both?

Re: Next Question-'71 Remote Trunk Release
I believe the factory trunk releases in 71 were vacuum operated, but I'm not aware of one being available on a GTX (the F81 code that shows up on fender tags does not designate a trunk release). I've seen cars retrofitted with later model electrical releases.

Re: Next Question-'71 Remote Trunk Release
I looked through my Body Service Manual and it give proceedures for adjusting and testing the trunk, "deck lid" actuator. Everything I read indicated that it is electrical. It doesn't say anything about vacuum or the need to have the engine running while operating or testing. Only that the battery needs to be in good condition.
It also matches the wire in which you are describing in your trunk.
