1972 400 air cleaner

Post by 72 RR fan » Wed Dec 31, 2008 7:05 pm

Is this the correct one for my car (1972 Road Runner)? The date on the decal is faint, but says 1972. The snorkels are of uneven length....

Pretty sure for 72’, the snorkels should have a rectangular cross section. The oval shape came later, 73' or 74'.

The fact that one snorkel is longer than the other is what I'm unsure of. :? The longer snorkel has an inlet for a preheater from the manifold.....maybe for colder climate??? I put it on a 440 in my garage. I see about the rectangular and oval shapes on the fresh air inlets....the 1972 decal throws me off... :(

Here are some pics of a different air cleaner I had saved in a file for reference......I saw it for sale, but passed at the time....same decal, but easier to read....

In 72’ all dual snorkel air cleaners had the pre-heat system including the heat stove on the driver’s side exhaust manifold. The heat stove and tube are missing in the above picture; you can see the tube fitting on the driver side snorkel. Despite the copyright date on the label I don’t believe it to be technically correct for 72’, 73’ maybe.

I was thinking maybe 73, with a copyright of 72 on the decal....hoping for 72 correct!

I've got the one off my Road Runner up in the attic. I'll take some pix and post them. I know for sure it's a "correct" one for a June 1972 St. Louis 440 Road Runner as I have owned the car since it was put on.

My build date is September 01. Does that mean it is an early 72 built in Sept of 71, or a late one built in Sept of 72?

To me, IMO, it doesn't look correct for a '72. That air cleaner looks like it belongs on a truck. I can remember my grandfather having one on his truck. The snorkels should be closer together.

Well then, I'll just have to buy a truck to wear this adornment! LOL..just kidding of course. I agree that it's NOT correct. ...I did find this interesting link.......mine is similar to the one listed for 1974, but it doesn't have that indentation for the compressor? I think. May be a truck..hmmm

http://www.nicksgarage.com/aircleaner.htm

If this is accurate info, it's a pretty neat link.

I have a black dual snorkel unit that was on a 440 out of a motoerhome...I'm gonna see if it has part numbers on it. It was on a later drivetrain though 1973? or 74?

Best guess is that's early. Mine was built in June which makes it a LATE 1972. So late that although the casting dates on the block are May 5 '72 the casting numbers are 1973. To me that indicates the foundry had already started on 1973 production.

Anyhow...here's some pix of mine. I can state absolutley this is the air cleaner that was put on my car when it was built in June 1972. I took it off when I restored the car as I did some engine "dress up" and put a Mopar Performance air cleaner on it. I could not find any part number on it anywhere! Zero, none, zip, nada, zilch, squat doo-doo!

A build date of Sept 01 for a 72 car would be 9/01/71....by Sept 72 they would have been building the 73 models.
I agree with the others, no way that air cleaner is correct for your car
AKA Butterscotch71....the road runner nest is out to win you over this year!Image

I got into a discussion with a fellow about air cleaner part numbers. I'm pretty sure the only part numbers on air cleaners was a yellow painted stamped number, I've never seen one with the actual stamped depressions into the metal. Anyone know for sure?
