1972 400 air cleaner
Is this the correct one for my car (1972 Road Runner)? The date on the decal is faint, but says 1972. The snorkels are of uneven length....

Pretty sure for 72’, the snorkels should have a rectangular cross section. The oval shape came later, 73' or 74'.

Re: 1972 400 air cleaner
The fact that one snorkel is longer than the other is what I'm unsure of.
The longer snorkel has an inlet for a preheater from the manifold.....maybe for colder climate??? I put it on a 440 in my garage. I see about the rectangular and oval shapes on the fresh air inlets....the 1972 decal throws me off...

Re: 1972 400 air cleaner
Here are some pics of a different air cleaner I had saved in a file for reference......I saw it for sale, but passed at the time....same decal, but easier to read....

Re: 1972 400 air cleaner
In 72’ all dual snorkel air cleaners had the pre-heat system including the heat stove on the driver’s side exhaust manifold. The heat stove and tube are missing in the above picture; you can see the tube fitting on the driver side snorkel. Despite the copyright date on the label I don’t believe it to be technically correct for 72’, 73’ maybe.

Re: 1972 400 air cleaner
I was thinking maybe 73, with a copyright of 72 on the decal....hoping for 72 correct!

I've got the one off my Road Runner up in the attic. I'll take some pix and post them. I know for sure it's a "correct" one for a June 1972 St. Louis 440 Road Runner as I have owned the car since it was put on.72 RR fan wrote:I was thinking maybe 73, with a copyright of 72 on the decal....hoping for 72 correct!

My build date is September 01. Does that mean it is an early 72 built in Sept of 71, or a late one built in Sept of 72?72Rdrnner wrote:I've got the one off my Road Runner up in the attic. To me, IMO, it doesn't look correct for a '72. That air cleaner looks like it belongs on a truck. I can remember my grandfather having one on his truck. The snorkels should be closer together.72 RR fan wrote:Is this the correct one for my car (1972 Road Runner)? The date on the decal is faint, but says 1972. The snorkels are of uneven length....

Well then, I'll just have to buy a truck to wear this adornment! LOL..just kidding of course. I agree that it's NOT correct. ...I did find this interesting link.......mine is similar to the one listed for 1974, but it doesn't have that indentation for the compressor? I think. May be a truck..hmmm

If this is accurate info, it's a pretty neat link.
I have a black dual snorkel unit that was on a 440 out of a motoerhome...I'm gonna see if it has part numbers on it. It was on a later drivetrain though 1973? or 74?

Re: 1972 400 air cleaner
Best guess is that's early. Mine was built in June which makes it a LATE 1972. So late that although the casting dates on the block are May 5 '72 the casting numbers are 1973. To me that indicates the foundry had already started on 1973 production.72 RR fan wrote:My build date is September 01. Anyhow...here's some pix of mine. I can state absolutley this is the air cleaner that was put on my car when it was built in June 1972. I took it off when I restored the car as I did some engine "dress up" and put a Mopar Performance air cleaner on it. I could not find any part number on it anywhere! Zero, none, zip, nada, zilch, squat doo-doo!

A build date of Sept 01 for a 72 car would be 9/01/71....by Sept 72 they would have been building the 73 models.72 RR fan wrote:My build date is September 01. Re: 1972 400 air cleaner
I got into a discussion with a fellow about air cleaner part numbers. I'm pretty sure the only part numbers on air cleaners was a yellow painted stamped number, I've never seen one with the actual stamped depressions into the metal. Anyone know for sure?
