Warning likely bogus V code car for sale

Post by Eric » Fri Dec 21, 2007 8:57 pm

I know a lot of you frequent moparts too....
I just noticed this car advertised over there today. Seems like a very good price for the car in the condition it appears to be and a very desireable color combo. Unfortunately, I belive the fender tag is bogus. Whether it is an original V code car or not, I do not know. I do not know the owner nor have I corresponded with him. Just wanted to give everyone a warning about this one!

I have no wish to argue, but how can you tell that the tag is bogus? It looks like an early build number, 209013, but the build date is late (april 71)..... the roof strobe is wrong, and shouldn't it have some chrome around the wheel wells? It also has the std door panels, but what is the tip off?

This car I have seen at shows around here and was worked on at Aloha Restoration.
I think the story goes that it's a real v code car but the tag has added options not original to the car.
Funny this car was at one show I was in and it didn't get a trophy and he was pissed.
I won 4th place too! LOL

Let's just say it has one code I do not believe was even available on 71 road runners and several missing codes (that should go along with codes listed on the tag).
Was Aloha involved in recreating the tag? I've not been impressed with other 71 B bodies I've seen come out of their shop....

I've gotta agree with Eric. The tag has obvious errors. I can't comment towards it being an original v-code car or not, but I'm confident in saying the tag isn't legit.

I'll also agree that Aloha has never impressed me with any 71 B I've seen come out of their shop.

If the codes can be added and deleted then how do you know the v-code wasnt added also? 8)

I could be wrong, but I think the r21 is wrong because it's missing the code for the axle. It has a 26 inch rad but it doesn't say what gear ratio.

That's what makes creating a fake tag on a car like this so stupid. It brings everything about the car under suspicion. I'd buy a car with no tag before I bought this one.
I won't get into what is incorrect about the tag. Not trying to be a jerk or withhold info from someone looking at purchasing a potentially vaulable car, but at the same time putting the info out there in a general forum could help educate the less scrupulous who may be thinking of doing the same thing with their car. Best to let them keep creating obvious errors!

I far as I know Aloha just repaired some mechanical issues on the car and did no restoration on this car.
Their blue 1971 GTX is very nice.
I meet the perious owner of it at Jefferson Swap Meet in Wisconsin.I also toured the facilities at Alhoha in 2002 (ever sold them (Aloha) one of my 1968-1970 era oil filters for $200)
I saw the then red 1971 GTX there awaiting resto ... neat car and very clean to start with.

I remember hearing about options not originally on the car being added to the tag (replaced tag?) there at the shop and asked why someone would do that to a V code car. Never really got an answer as to why other than that's the way he would have ordered the car.
Not sure how many owners it's gone throught since then but the stink of something not right with it travels along with the car.
Shame it's a cool car just not a legit car (as far as I know anyway).

I've seen the blue car in person, and I have to say I was not at all impressed. It's a decent car, but I'd expect much better from a high dollar resto shop, especially with the asking price they had on it!!!

The storyI was told was that they were going to use the blue GTX as a promotional center piece to show what Aloha restoration can be.
If you say it's not that nice that would be sort of funny.

EDIT ... here are pictures of the car ... looks nice to me.

And that price is for a non numbers car!
What I remember about it from a couple years back and looking at photos:
paint looks good in the photos, but had a lot of orange peel and looked too "think" (the mid body lines weren't as crisp as original cars)
the fender tag coded black pinstripe V7X is missing
the rear wing was added
PB booster is incorrect
blue carpet had a lot of stains on the drivers side
A02 drivers aid coded on fender tag and broadcast sheet, but dash indicators missing (IIRC)
Only mentioning a few items....it's not my intent to tear apart the car or bash Aloha

Now, the quality is better than I could do, but I'd make sure on a car with that asking price that it was correct! It's a very "nice" looking car, just not restored accurately. Interestingly, it is an original rubber bumper AND rear window louver car! Also, it's coded for the fairly rare A02 drivers aid package. Again, it's a nice car, I just don't think Aloha knows 71 B bodies very well....
