Your best bet is what everybody says about the numbers, its easy to put parts on a car but its more involved to put all the numbers in the right places and have them match. 8)

Well the guy said he added the trim when he bought in the 76 and he's the second owner. And he sent me the fendertag and well I think this wraps up this mystery. Also I've checked everything on here that would have the roadrunner emblems even on the dash it's just the trim got me worried about it.

I am not saying that you are nuts, but what I think everyone here is saying that just because you have a fender tag, decals and a vebal from the seller saying it is a RR doesn't mean it is 100%.
Please check out this 71GTX for sale on Ebay and tell me or us if you think it is real or memorex, it has a detached tag and decals. You need to be sure the RR is real if you what to buy it has a RR because if you find out later it isn't, you will have a difficult time emotionaly with your decision......

Here is the 71 GTX..... What do you think, and I hope it makes you think, I couldn't buy this car if I didn't check the body numbers out.
If this 71 GTX belongs to a member here, sorry to be picking on it, but I must.....

Ya I've checked this one on ebay and got me thinking because of all the satellite interior panels. But I nowadays any car could be a joke but I couldn't check out every car I was going to purchase. So sometimes you gotta take the guys word since I have talked to him. But I know you guys are worried about it not being a real roadrunner. But thanks for the helpout guys that would of scared me if I didn't post this before I bought the car. And I typed in the fendertag decoder and had nothing to say about a sunroof on the car.

my bet is SSP

Post by 1971SSP » Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:24 am

That car looks like mine, molding/top included, minus the sunroof. Mine is a 71 SSP. If this were Vegas, my guess is the odds would pay 1/9 its a SSP, 999/1 its a RR.

I bought my car from the original owner in AZ sight unseen (you were sleeping Nick!). But it was an advertised SSP, and didn't have so many questions like the 72 were talking about. Let us know what you do.

After seeing pics of that 71 GTX you found, I'll guess you were in church...

I found my car in Tucson.

It sure sounds fishy. If you can't see it in person pay for an inspection.

It you REALLY want THAT car and are willing to risk it not being a real RR buy it. If the price is right it will still be a 72 Plymouth B body. Maybe not a Road Runner though.

Keep looking. You will probable be glad you didn't buy this car.

I wish I had.

Well the tag you show is a 1972 RR tag.
It has the options that look to be on this car and the tag sequence number is (looks to be) G99154.
The "G" make to a Sunroof optioned car.
413 is the build date of April 13 1972.
I have my production numbers at home .. i'll PM you.

I would check the radiator support, Vin tag, door tag and cowl numbers.
Looks like it could be real.
The thing people are hung up about is the SSP trim and lower argent paint ... which you say the pervious owner added ... that could be possible.

It looks as if the tag and the car show have options the match so it could be the real deal.
It has the light group, a 340, white canopy vinyl top, sunroof, FE5 red car and white interior.
Sound like a great deal if it really is a RR.

OK ... I emailed my friend Jimmy Boros (1971-1972 B-Body guru) about this car and he believes he has this tag in his records.
He and I think it's the real deal as far as we can tell.
It's a 1 of 34 SUNROOF 1972 Road Runners.
For $5000 it would be a good deal ... needs lots of work but a RARE CAR!

Surprisingly, the sunroof code (M51) didn't show up on fender tags on St. Louis cars. As 1972RM23 mentioned, the G at the beginning of the VON (vehicle order number) is the only indication you will see on the tag (and a sunroof car will have to have either the full or partial vinyl top)
So this guy claims to have added the SSP trim? That's a lot of work to make a runner look like a non-performance car!

Ya and I asked about who did the two tone paint and he said he did it to look like a sebring plus. But hey people have different taste I'm not going to lie but the trim is something I atually think I like since it's unusual. It's just the silver or gray paint I can't stand to look at.

Well if he says its numbers matching (at least the engine) thats something that would have to be checked in person anyway so if you are going to do that I would follow the other suggestions that were made here and check the numbers on other parts of the car.

If its what the seller claims to be I would think its worth the $$.

BTW Nick that so called GTX you linked from E-Bay looks like such a joke. Its got the satellite emblem on the grill and on the one on the inside door panel along with a detached fender tag plus a satellite hood. Only place I saw any kind of GTX emblem was on the trunk lid and those are easy to find and on top of that he has no title. :haha:
{edit} It seems looking at it... this is the 2nd time that guy is selling that car and the last guy that bought it said "great ebay seller would buy from again!!!!!" so why is the same guy selling the car again! (that satellite/GTX)
