Exhaust system 440-6 Runner

Post by general » Thu Feb 08, 2007 11:40 am

Ok my next question is, did the standard exhaust system include mufflers and resonators or just mufflers on a 440 six pack car. I know Hemi cars had both the mufflers and resonators but not sure about the six pack cars.

thanks

I've been studying this too, as the exhaust on my car is not original. Here's what I believe to be correct:
Resonators came standard only on hemi cars which I believe would mandate that all hemi cars had the brite exhaust tips. They might have been available on 440+6 California cars that mandated the quiet exhaust but were ordered with the brite tips (I have no record of one of these cars). Normal 440+6 cars with brite tips (and without) did not have resonators.

So there was no such thing as having resonators with just the turned down exhausts (no tips). You had to have bright tips with a resonator.
What is this quiet exhaust I read about in the parts book. Is that the resonators?

The turn down tips accomplished the same thing as the resonators, so no turned down exhaust with resonators.
I was looking back through the registry, and I do have at least one V code car built in LA with both the N42 (brite tips) and N97 (noise reduction). It's the incorrectly restored B7 car that was on ebay last year, restored by Moviestar Musclecars....

OK I think I got it. I didn't realize that the resonators were there to lower the exhaust noise. So in California, what you are saying is that maybe you had to get the resonators if you wanted the bright exhaust tips.
Thanks Eric.
