These companies are never going to make them. I came to that realization after hearing the same old song and dance for a year. I called them on their b.s. about 4 months ago when I called (for the third time) to see when they would be available and they told me 4-6 months. I told them they said the same thing a year ago and they replied....uh, well I guess we don't know then. I said "do you ever plan on making them" and they said probably not, but maybe small patches at some point. Don't hold your breath. Find used sheet metal if you can.

quarter panels

Post by ct71rr » Sat Oct 07, 2006 12:39 pm

I'm starting to believe that. I spoke with Laysons last spring. They told me that the panels were the next to be produced after their Cuda valances. Then I spoke with them a few weeks ago. They told me "Looks like we wont have them till next year". I also got into it with them about their whole "When the sheet metal market recovers" thing they've been saying for the past 3 years. Just the same old run-a-round!! I guess we can only keep our fingers crossed.

'71 rr quarter panels

Post by ct71rr » Mon Oct 23, 2006 10:30 pm

Hello all,

I spoke with laysons a few hours ago. They assured me that their '71 road runner quarter panels are no longer in the "Pre-order" phase. They are now into the production phase and "hope to have them before x-mas". Soon, they are going to start calling those who have pre-ordered them to make final payment. They were not sure yet of the final price though. Hopefully this is accurate information, as they have told me on several occasions (past 3 years) "Hopefully by spring". Anyway, lets keep our fingers crossed and hope for a christmas miracle!!

'71 quarter panels

Post by ct71rr » Sat Dec 09, 2006 4:21 pm

Well, the Laysons saga comtinues...I received an email from"Dave Layson" today. He wrote:

...We started on production demo's this month. This means we have gone through the plastic demo test and now onto the soft tooling sheetmetal tests to make sure we are still all "A ok" with the intended mold production. Once we are done with these demo tests - we go into a hard toolong and into a pre-production demo which is an actual representation of a sheetmetal finished stamping sample - then we test fit that and if all ok - we go into a production run. So - we are still out at least 60 days before we have anything close to being able to ship to any cutomer. Sorry - but this stuff takes a lot of work and time.

I got this email the same day one of their techs told my wife "they probably wont be ready till next september". So, I guess we still have to wait for these things. :(

I was talking with someone that works there and this is what he wrote.

"I asked about the 71-72 quarter panels today at work. From what I understand, there was a manufacturer interested in making these, but the manufacturer shelved the project for lack of demand. However, there are a couple of other manufacturers that may be interested in producing them, but they are concerned with tooloing costs and the ability to recover their(the manufacturer's) costs if/when production were to begin.

It is still being talked about, but at this particular point in time, that's all it is...is talk.

I wished I had better news for you....."

For what it's worth, I've been conversing with Dave Layson via email for the past few weeks. He told me he expects the quarters to be available sometime in April. As far as speaking with other employees of Laysons, I addressed Mopower 71's message with Dave as well. He stated he alone would know if parts are/aren't going to be made as he is the one solely responsible for new part development and production. I guess we'll just have to wait and see....

Another update from Dave Layson;

He stated on 12/30 that a plastic demo was approved and they are now into soft tooling (metal samples) and hope to have those in by the first of February. If those go well, they should be in production and have stock ready to ship by approximately April 1.

The last email I received from Dave Layson on 12/30/06 stated if everything stays on track, they will have stock "ready to ship by April 1 approximately".
