N42 Exhaust Tips

Post by Gotgrey » Mon Mar 31, 2014 5:01 pm

Hi everyone
I have noticed that on my 1972 Roadrunner the car has a short and a long Chrome tip. Must have been done back before 1981. They are both in fair to good condition so it doesn't give away any secrets on which one is correct. Can anyone help on which one is the correct ones to have.

Pictures please. Are you talking about the slotted tips? I think that between the Road Runner, and Charger, the Runner had shorter tips.

Didn't the GTX get resonators because of the 440? Then that would be a completely different tip. We need to see what he's got on the car.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure only the Hemi cars with the exhaust tips got the resonators. Yes, those are short, but they're completely different than the regular short tip.

I always struggle with adding pictures here. I have posted other question, one of them was about under carriage doll up. There is a picture in my photo bucket that shows them. Just can't seem to remember how. Hell to get old! I'll work at it or get my kids to help me. Sad!
I first thought you wanted pictures from "Mopar's at the Strip"
By the way Yes they are slotted, Bright, Decorative, Machine gun and any other name they have received over the years. It had Cherry bomb mufflers added back in the late 70's and I take it one was replaced then for what ever reason. Actually I bring this up because there is a 72 Lemon twist RR for sale on Ebay right now and he listed that his Roadrunner has a short and long Chrome tip as if it is standard that way.

The one on the left looks correct, and the right one looks like a Charger, or a resonator type. If it has screw holes in the front it is. Let us see a side few please.

Thanks for the help first of all. Looking closer the both of them are in rough shape. The short one Has paint over spray on it and the long one must have been in a fight and lost.

If you read this persons remarks he or she mentions the exhaust tips being two different sizes. Did Chrysler have a Right and Left?

No, that person doesn't know what they're talking about. As others here have said, the short tips are correct for a 71/72 runner. There were a total of 4 different tips for 71/72 B bodies. The short tip (Plymouth 2dr B body) for non-resonator cars like the one you have, the long tip (Dodge Charger) for non-resonator cars like the other one you have, the short resonator mounted tip (Plymouth 2dr B body with resonators) and the long resonator mounted tip (Dodge Charger with resonator). Your car should have short tips. The long tip is incorrect for your car.

Thanks a bunch Guys! One of these days I'll have the exhaust replaced. Though the Cherry bomb sound brings back some memories.
Hope to see plenty of 71-74 Roadrunners and add a few 1972 fender tags information to my others documented. Try to take some photos as well.
Thanks again,
Paul
