Good Morning,
I was looking on E-Bay and there was a 71 RR and in the trunk on the driver side wheel well there were what appeared to be tabs welded to the driver side wheel well and trunk floor. The tabs were probably 1 to 2 inches long and 3/8 inches wide and were being used to hold in place the tail light wires in the trunk. There were what appeared to be four tabs, two on the wheel well itself and two on the trunk floor. I have 72 RR and those little tabs were not in my car my question is, are they suppose to be in the 72 RR?
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: metal tabs in trunk
I assume you're talking about the tabs with the round holes? I believe these were used to hold the panels on the assembly line. 72 runner photos attached.

Re: metal tabs in trunk
On my 71, there are 3 of those tabs on the inner wheel well and one tab that is broken off on mine that I think was attached on the trunk extension. It is wrapped around a plastic bracket that was taped to the wiring harness. As far as I know the wiring harness sat in those tabs. The 72 might be different, but my 71 also has the tabs (with the hole) on the rear of the wheel well( part of the wheel well). I think I see one of those tabs for the wire harness and the white plastic bracket in the picture.

Re: metal tabs in trunk
Eric, I was talking about the little metal tabs that are attached to the bottom edges of the driver side wheel well and the trunk extension that you have in your picture. But, you did enlighten me on the curved metal with the hole in it which was used for forming the wheel wells. Also, thank you rradar71 for the information about the plastic brackets taped to the wiring harness.
Eric can I ask a favor, can you take close up pictures of those tabs that are holding down the tail light wiring harness and a rough measure of placement and post them? One more thing Eric, I am assuming based off the pictures you took that your car has the original paint still on it? If so what is your feeling about the trunk latch being painted or not? The hood latch is not painted so I was assuming that the rear trunk latch was not painted and mine did not appear to be painted?
Also, rradar71 can I ask the same of you could you take a close up pictures of the plastic brackets for me and post them too. Do you know where I can find the plastic brackets? I am trying real hard to get back to original as I can for my 72 RR GY8 as possible.
I know I am asking for your time so I really mean it when I say, Thank You So Much.

Those photos are from a car I was looking at purchasing a few years ago. Unfortunately I do not have any better photos. I only own 71 runners. I'd be happy to give you measurements from my original 71s but I cannot guarantee that 72s are the same.
On the rear trunk latch. I agree that the mechanism should not be painted. On my survivor 71, the mounting bolts however were painted. The catch should be painted body color.

Road Runner Nest is fantastic. What a great group of people to be associated with. I will use this information when I get the car painted. Weird they paint the bolts and not the mechanism but, paint the catch?? If you don't mind could you tell me the location of the little hold downs welded to the wheel well and trunk extension?
I also like the pictures of the plastic wire holders taped to the wire harness. I am so excited to find all this detailed information before my car is painted.
Thanks,
Jeff
