Re: 71B Heater/defrost cable
I'm attaching a screen cap from a 1972 service manual. I expect 71 is the same, but cannot verify until I get home to check.
Circle W & Z -- one clip anchors the cable to the plenum, and another clip attaches it to the arm that moves the door -- either heat/defrost or hot/cool blend. Where to find CORRECT clips is another matter.

Thanks for providing that picture but I think the 72 box is different than what I have. One thing I forgot to mention is that its a non a/c box.
If you look at the picture I posted there is a screw, so it is either somekind of a clip or the end of the cable is molded to accept a screw.

Yes, the 72 is different. If you'd like, I can send a .pdf file of the 71 service manual section for heaters. Send me a private mail including a email address where I can send the PDF.

The black tab of the cable is held to the metal tab with a sheet metal screw, cable going over the top, black tab facing down, between the metal bent tabs.

That's what I ended up doing altough it looks weird. I find the cable end a little too high that it does not sit down on the lever too much. I'm afraid it will pop out. So I put a push nut on it to help with that.road chicken wrote:The black tab of the cable is held to the metal tab with a sheet metal screw, cable going over the top, black tab facing down, between the metal bent tabs.

No that's right. If you look at the heights on the metal tabs they are different to make up the difference in the cab;e and the plastic end diameters.
The cable end does not go over the door arm. There is a spring steel clip that slides over the door arm and the cable goes through two slots in the clip. That is where the adjustment for that cable is made... by sliding the cable in those two slots so the selector will line up with OFF, HEAT and DEFROST.

Re: 71B Heater/defrost cable
That is what I'm missing, the spring steel clip,I can see that would do the trick about the cable being too high. I also missed the height of those tabs, they are different. Now got to find one of those clips, thanks for the help.road chicken wrote:general wrote:That's what I ended up doing altough it looks weird. Re: 71B Heater/defrost cable
Was working on my 71 last night. Does the plastic covered part of the cable just lay into the clip, like in circle w from the diagram, or do I need to pinch it with pliers or something?
Re: 71B Heater/defrost cable
I think the cable goes on top of the tabs not below them.

Re: 71B Heater/defrost cable
I took some pictures of the clip and proper orientation of the cable to the tab. I'll post them later after I get home.
