Rear axle dimensions

Post by rr6pak » Sun Dec 16, 2012 5:42 am

Hi all. I thought there was a post that someone put up a while back that had the dimensions for rear ends. I remember someone posted pictures and it looked like they came from a service manual. Then I tried to search my manuals with no result. I'm looking for the dimensions from axle flange to flange, flange to center, and from spring mount to center or the otherside spring mount. How wide?, etc, etc. How much of a difference is there from a B, C body (inch wise)? Any info greatly appreciated. BTW-Its for 8 3/4 rear.

Thanks!

This chart is accurate, as far as it goes, but this flange to flange number is for the housing, not the width including axles, and brake drums. You may also need the width between the wheel mounting surfaces.
Bottom line, trust no one, measure them yourself! There are at least 3 different C body widths, and the same for B bodies.

Thanks. This is for my 71 RR. Seems to be a little confusion as to if its for a B body. I'm out of town but as soon as I get back, I'll check next week or so and post it. A friend is rebuilding the rear and thinks it came from a C...IDK. It appeared to be the original.

If I remember correctly, a mid sixties C body, is the same width as E body, or a little narrower than 71-4 B body. This would give you a little more room for aftermarket wheels.
The early 70's C body is WIDER, maybe 1-2 inches than your stock axle. Supposed to be the same width as 71-4
B body wagon. This wouldn't be ideal, but would probably work with stock offset wheels as long as you didn't go
crazy with tire size!
So, repeat after me, measure, measure, measure.

As far as the tire size, I'm probably gonna run 15 x 7 to10 in the rear. This is not said in stone as of yet :). My main concern is to make sure that the rear axle is right, and hopefully, original to the car. I will get more info once I get home to see.
