1972 Rear Valance with Cutouts - Real or Modified?

Post by sdweatherman » Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:58 pm

Just wondering how you tell a real deal 1972 rear valance with cut-outs from one that someone just modified. Do the real cutouts have a lip on them or something? Is there a part stamp somewhere on the valance? Thanks for the help! Scott.

i dont think the two reliefs you see are "cutouts" i am pretty sure those are the clearance cuts for the gas tank straps, the "cutouts" should be stamped and have a lip folded in and also bulge out a little, i think. i have never had a plymouth valance with "cutouts" but the one i had on a charger had folds in it. furhtermore, the 71 rr i have sent to the body shop had a valance like your picture and those spots are to get to the "j" bolt nuts that hold the fuel tank straps.

That's a standard valance, not a cutout valance.

Does the cut out pan have a different part number then the standard pan?

According to my Mitchell Part Number service guide The '72 had two diff.Numbers:
With "Decor tips" 3615262
W/O Tips 3615265
All '71s were the same 3615113

I bought a cutout rear valance to replace the one that I cant find in the barn. It looks like someone made this one. The cutouts look like someone cut them out and formed the edges. They did a good job and it looks like it will work for me. I bought it because he only wanted 50 bucks for it. It would be a lot eaiser to make a cutout pan from a Plymouth standard pan then it would be to make one for a charger. The Plymouth pans don't have the same shape to the cutouts as the Chargers.

I was looking for PN on this pan. I found a number, located just to the right of the left cutout on the bottom lip. 419W31? I can't see the last digit. So I'm guessing the PN is located somewhere else on the pan. Does anyone know where the PN is located on these pans?

If I recall correctly the part number on a NOS pan would be stamed in ink on the back side (no metal impression). If you have a used one I doubt you'll find a part number on it.

This is the template I created to transfer the cutouts from my beat-up original to my nice standard valance with the turndown tail pipe reliefs. Note the small triangle of metal added because of the tail pipe reliefs on the stand valance that is not present on the cut-out valance. As well the dotted line represents the simple fold inward around the upper part of the cut-out, as mentioned the Charger version has a more complex detailed stamping around the opening.

That makes sense. Now I'll be wondering what the numbers are that are stamped on this valance. Has anyone else seen stamped numbers on the rear pan??

72rrgtx, nice job!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Now that I have my SSP stripped down to the shell, I have noticed all sorts of numbers stamped in various panels and brackets. I am guessing these are internal factory numbers for assembly purposes, and not actual part numbers. Just a guess.
Scott.

the rear pan on my road runner was fabed into a tip style pan. at some events people have looked at it and said you have the correct rear pan. i tell them that it was reworked and they can't believe it.
the pattern was made from a beat up original.
