1972 satellite sebring plus
Hay everyone, I bought a 72 ssp originally thinking this way I could do what i want with it without worrying about destroying a rarer car. After doing a little research it turns out this maybe a little rare. I am not sure how about going to find out if its rare or not and if i should keep it as original as I can So here I post. Here is fender tag decoded any help would be appreciated Thanks in advance

21,399 SSP's made for 1972
400 4 bbl and 4-speed would be somewhat rare but I have no numbers for engine/trans breakdowns for SSP's.

Re: 1972 satellite sebring plus
Can't help you with production numbers, but it sounds like a cool car. You rarely see a restored SSP that hasn't been cloned as a road runner....might be nice to restore it to factory correct.

Re: 1972 satellite sebring plus
Thank guys I did plan on keeping it close to Original just not sure if I will like gold and I know I wont like gold interior. I do not have original engine or trans but do plan on putting 400 4spd back in it I do suppose that if I find out it is rare I will concede to the gold interior but I have a long way to go to get to that point
Re: 1972 satellite sebring plus
Gold with Gold interior and canopy vinyl top plus 400 4 speed would be an AWESOME combo.
Keep it this way but then again it's your car.

Well since you would like it gold with gold interior and canopy top thats what i will do haha. As it sits right now media blasted and epoxy primed I have a while before I make my interior decision.

EVERYONE seems to have a black or white interior. You seldom see the gold interiors, and it's nice to see something different for a change. People will be talking about your car long after they've seen one with either a black or white interior in it. Fresh gold paint looks real good, especially if its shiny. I wish I still had my gold '72 Satellite Sepring Plus. That was a green interior car.

Re: 1972 satellite sebring plus
Cool! Another GY8 Sebring Plus! I wish mine would have come with the big block. I would have gone straight back to original. If yours is a numbers matching car - definitely go back to original. The 400/4spd has got to be fairly rare - maybe right up there with the 440RR/GTX. Mine came with non matching 318/Auto, so I am taking a few liberties and not going back to the saddle brown interior. I am keeping the GY8 paint though. If you got time, check out my car on cardomain.com. I gotta long way to go, just learning how to weld. Good luck! Scott.

Another vote for the gold!
I had a '73 Challenger, gold, white interior.
The hood had been repainted, and had faded. But the gold paint on the sides, and decklid was amazing for
12 year old paint on a very neglected car.
Glad you're keeping it. If anyone gives you grief about the 400, just tell them it's a bored out 383!

Re: 1972 satellite sebring plus
I discourage powder coating. From what I've read ( about airplanes) powder coating is a corrosion promoter, the powder is just plastic that is heated and melted on the metal. And once the seal is broken moisture will wick up under it and start rusting. After coating, bolts will not fit and you have to ream the hole, breaking the seal. Paint on the other hand is chemically bonded to the metal.

Re: 1972 satellite sebring plus
I got that info from people in the airplane world, especially up in Alaska. They would find the powder coating still there, and nice looking, but the steel was rusted away beneath it. I also heard some riding lawn mower makers quit using it on their decks for the same reason.

You know the lawn mower one makes sense come to think of it I can see the deck with the powder coating just hanging there
