gas tank strap, pad insulation

Post by E86 GTX » Wed May 30, 2012 1:04 am

OK I did not have the privilege of removing the tank from my 71 GTX. Did it have a pad between the trunk pan and the tank? Did the straps have rubber insulation between them and the tank?

Thanks: Your Friend Ben

If you want a pic of the pad to see what it looks like, let me know. I have not reinstalled mine yet. Scott.

I'm replacing my fuel tank in a few days.
What is the correct procedure for starting a car with no fuel in the lines with a replaced tank?
Do you fill up the fuel filter with a little gas to help it draw fuel through the lines?

I pore a couple table spoons gas in the carb. Replace the breather to prevent fire, then start. You may have to do this 3 or 4 times depending on how good your pump is. This saves a lot of wear on the starter. If you choose to use the starter alone it will work but be careful not to over heat the starter by over cranking. That's what I always did when starting a car that has run out of gas.

Here is the pic of the gas tank pad. It measures 22.5 x 25.5 x 3/16 and is made of a cardboard/felt type material. Not quite sure what its real name is. Scott.

Thanks Scott. That has me thinking twice about the e-bay pads. They are foam and that makes me think it might hold moisture.

Back in the early '90s, Rick E. at Mopar Action restored a '72 RR.
He used roofing felt, which I think is a little thin, but a good match for the material.
Maybe doubling it up would be about the right thickness. If you've got a piece try it.
The best part, IT DOESN'T SHOW!

Just took a look at yearone.com and they have the reproduction pads. They have a note that says the reproduction pads are foam, where the originals are tar. So the felt paper idea by gcoupe72 looks to be right on track. When I look again at my pad, it does have a thick felt/tar paper consistency. Hope this helps! Scott.

Dixie Restorations says they have the correct pad, but thats if you want to spend $80 on a little pad that no one will ever see!
