4 vents on gas tank.

Post by E86 GTX » Sat May 19, 2012 11:09 pm

OK do I need to hook the 4 vents up on the new tank or plug them. Not making a show car. The tank was removed when I got the car. The new sending unit has a vent or return line also(which one?). The metal line for that is there but I have no Idea what to hook it to up in the engine bay.

..........Thanks: Your Friend Ben

What year car are you working with? Where on the tank are the nipples located? The extra fitting on the sender is for a return line if the car was so equipped.

After a quick post search, appears you are working with a 71’. If the tank vapor separator is present, hook the vent lines back-up to it. Check all hoses for deterioration, replace as necessary. Nothing wrong with the tank vent system as originally designed.

Except that the separator tanks tend to rust out. Give it a close inspection. Have to remove the wheel and panel inside the wheel well to get to it.

I agree with using it if everything is in usable condition. Keeps the garage smelling better if nothing else.

If you plug everything off, make sure you utilize a vented gas cap.

Agreed, like the other tank system components rust can be an issue. There isn’t one part on these cars that was designed with the intention of lasting anywhere near 40+ years however.

Thanks for the help guys. The return line. It seems like there was three lines on the fuel pump on my 71 road runner that I sold in the mid-late 70's. was one a return? The pump on this 71 440 GTX has only two lines. In from tank and out to carburetor. There is also a canister under the drivers side front fender that is not hooked up to anything. It has a line that runs up close to the brake booster then ends. The vents in the tank are like the picture you posted, thanks for that. There is another line that runs alongside the gas and return line. It also ends in the engine bay hooked to nothing.

Thanks: Your Friend Ben

440 and Hemi cars had a vapor separator fuel filter, which included a 1/4" return back to the fuel tank pick-up/sending unit.

The third line comes off the liquid/vapor separator at the rear of the car and goes to the valve cover breather cap on a 71. On a 72 it goes to the charcoal filter. 1970 N97 (CA emissions) cars also had this feature.

OK Thanks Jim. That covers the third line. There is a nipple on the valve cover breather cap that has nothing hooked to it. I will check out the separator because there is a hole in the trunk pan I need to repair right over where the 4 rubber lines leave the tank. I am a retired Boilermaker certified pressure welder, but this is new ground for me. Got some .023 hard wire and bi mix gas. Tried the welder out yesterday on a piece of scrap from the old roof. Welds real sweet. I will just take my time. Got more time than money.

. Thanks Again

From looking at the "fuel vapor saver" image you posted it looks like the lines can have no real order in hooking up but I will be sure to hook the line to the valve cover breather back as it originally was.
I went and took the separator off and though it is uglier than a 58 Chevy, it does not seem to have been compromised by the rust. I may coat it with Ospho before I re install it? ? ? When you turn it from end to end I hear one little something fall. Where do you get the fuel filter with the return line on it or do I need it?

There is a aftermarket filter out there that will work just as well. The vapor port is on in the opposite side, and it won't have the mounting tab.
