Re: Where are we on the 'GTX badge' thing...
OK I know this is not a "GTX" question.
I've got a 1972 air grabber, 400 car. The car has been repainted once.
The Road Runner stickers were all painted over! yuck!!!
I see no evidence of any "400" stickers. So if the 400 was the standard engine, does that mean that 400 cars had no engine call-outs?
I remember seeing a standard hood RM back in the 80s that had the blank reflective stickers on the hood, so now I know it was 400 equipped?
Thanks for all who posted photos!!

Yes, for 1972 no call outs for the 400 engine on any Road Runner, standard hood or Air Grabber N96 hood.gcoupe72 wrote:I see no evidence of any "400" stickers. So if the 400 was the standard engine, does that mean that 400 cars had no engine call-outs?

Why I do not know? 73-74 had call out but it was an optional engine those years.
I think there were no call outs for a 318 (standard engine) in 73-74 either.

It's from a for sale ad on moparts and he said it's a N96 car but you are right from this angle you can't tell.72RoadRunnerGTX wrote:1972RM23, can't tell from the shot, is that a N96 car?1972RM23 wrote:Original paint?
Emblem in the original location.
Where is the 440 vinyl call out, it should be under the GTX emblem.

Re: Where are we on the 'GTX badge' thing...
The metallic blue car that was on Moparts is an original. I've seen other original paint '72 RR/X air grabber cars that didn't have the 440 decals on them either. So maybe somewhere along the line Chrysler stopped putting them on the car. To save a step, and a couple of bucks. We used to joke that the reason the 400 cars didn't have a decal on them in 1972 was that they were embarrased at the poor performance. In 1973 it didn't matter as the majority of the Hi-Po GM & FoMoCo vehicles didn't run very good either compared to their past models. I know I've had guys back east tell me their 400s ran strong. But the California ones with the smog pump had a hard time getting out of their own way. I didn't care because I wanted a cruiser. Which is why I bought it. We also used to say starting in '73 that a 318 was not a Road Runner, and wouldn't let them in our Road Runner club at first. By '74 we relented, and let them in. Because it was getting harder and harder to find an owner with a new Road Runner. If they did. It was usually a 318.

I would say it's a RM23 so it's a Road Runner but 72-74 440 cars were RR/GTX's72GTX4SPEED wrote:my 72 title says gtx for model. what do others say?

Re: Where are we on the 'GTX badge' thing...
My '72 Road Runner "GTX" had the "440" on the hood "horse shoes", the 400 engined cars were blank. Air grabber hoods did not have the horse shoes so the 440 was on the fender. I have 3 small "GTX" emblems. One on each fender behind the wheel well in front of the door.
The trunk has one. Mine is on the left which according to purists is the wrong side, but I bought the car new and that's where it was. Normally it's on the right, next to the "Standing Road Runner". When I restored my car I put the "GTX" back on the left side, since that's the way it was when I bought the car.
Screw the "purists"....btw I also just painted over the paint runs on the firewall!

Careful, there is some potential to offend some of us here with comments like that.72Rdrnner wrote:Screw the "purists"....btw I also just painted over the paint runs on the firewall!

Yeah....I am amazed when I see the "perfect" restorations, you know where random "mistakes" (over spray) are "accurately replicated"! "Accurately replicate" a random mistake, yeah sure!72RoadRunnerGTX wrote:Careful, there is some potential to offend some of us here with comments like that.72Rdrnner wrote:Screw the "purists"....btw I also just painted over the paint runs on the firewall!
I've been told more times that I can remember that my trunk "GTX" is on the wrong side, yet it came that way from the factory. Face it, "perfect cars" were NEVER built. They all had warts, which is what makes each and every one unique. My firewall paint run and misplaced emblem are two unique things on my car.

There are way too many over-restored cars out there and for me it ruins their character. These cars had loads of runs and screw ups. My Dart and my Challenger had runs everywhere in the original paint, even the rad support on my challenger was crushed when they dropped the body at the factory!72Rdrnner wrote:Yeah....I am amazed when I see the "perfect" restorations, you know where random "mistakes" (over spray) are "accurately replicated"! People over-restore them and then dont drive them! WHAT A WASTE!!! The guys on moparts will tell you that you HAVE to spend $40K restoring your car, NO YOU DONT!
If I cant drive/enjoy them then what is the point. I do it for the cars NOT the money!

Can't agree more. I "restored" mine just so I can cruise the sonic and get half off my bill. At that rate I'll get back the $19,487.32 I paid to restore it (did all the work myself, in my garage) in about a bazillion years. Butt...it's no "trailer queen" although I do get a trophy or two at the local World of Wheels Show with my "Too Blue Two"71ChallengerSE wrote:

My point exactly. Not all "from the factory" is "factory correct". It's entirely possible that for whatever reason the GTX on my trunk got missed in St Louis so the dealer added it, in the wrong place. Whatever the reason when I picked the car up, thats where it was...so I put it back when I restored the car.1972rrgtx wrote:Funny, I have a Petty Blue 440 RR GTX with the GTX on the left side of the RR Bird on the trunk lid. Nice looking car you've got there...but then I'm partial to that color!
I didn't get the fancy exhaust tips with my car and have always wished I had. When I had the exhaust system done I had chrome turned down ones put on.
