The 26" being for an E-body makes sense but I dont know how the 71/72 could use an 18" lanyard. If you route it directly from the screw around the front of the hood to the pin, its only 10"s. I just measured. If you route it in front of the bumper, 25" is about as short as you want it. And....if you route it between the bumper and the header panel, its 23".72RoadRunnerGTX wrote:As for the lanyards, the 3579673 26" part number above, the 72' parts books has it as an e-body part and an 18" lanyard listed for the b-bodies.

Re: Hood pin cables
Well I'll be dammed
18"'s is a lot of slack to be slapping around on your paint at freeway speeds as you can see on the 2nd picture. I defintely wouldn't be comfortable "testing" that out. The third picture shows less slack and doesnt appear to be touching the paint except maybe the very leading edge of the hood. Put a little bit of that clear 3M guard there and you'd be golden but I can't believe they are using 18" length's with that shot; the 2nd picture, ya.
Do any of you guys who've got lanyards notice any paint chaffing with whatever method your using?
I see the pin clip is in the vertical position there as well

Re: Hood pin cables
I hate it when you guys make me look up things
Unfortunately, my scanner is not working....I have a Car and Driver article from Nov 70 showing a 440 GTX with full vinyl top and luggage rack...and hood pins. The cables on that car are routed through the loop bumper. This is the same as I've seen on survivor cars. It's possible the early build cars are different. The orange ad car has a very early build date and shows up in ads with both chrome and elastomeric front bumpers. It's possible that when they switched to the the rubber bumpers, the hood cables were not long enough...just a theory.
The parts catalogue I have (December 71 final revision) lists 18" cable package 3579674 for 71 Plym/Dodge E bodies and the 26" cable package 3579673 for Plym/Dodge B bodies.

Re: Hood pin cables
Looking again at my 72' Cat., the kit noted to have 18" cables is specified for A,B,&E bodies. Quantity required number for 3579673, 26" cables, is definitely placed under B&J model column and not R&W. Not sure what 6024654 under R&W would be then, appears to be replacement screw, cable, & clip only for the 18" kit above it. This is one of the listings in those cats, and there are many, that left those of us ordering out of them, back in the day, scratching our heads and guessing.

Re: Hood pin cables
Sorry I'm dumb, but what does the B & J and R & W signify?
Thank you guys very much for going to all this trouble, or is the detective work part of the hobby fun?

Re: Hood pin cables
So to finally to sum up, the proper lanyards are 18" 3579674 and get routed between the hood and the header panel like the Rapid Transit ad. It seems some cars received the 26" ones which were looped through the bumper.
Again, does anyone running these have any scratching issues, or do you just put them on for car shows?

Re: Hood pin cables
I'd say to sum it up, the parts books changed between 71 and 72. For 71 cars the books list 26" as the correct cable size, while for 72 cars they list 18". And all survivor 71s I've looked at had the cables routed through the bumper. I've not really looked carefully at 72s, but the few photos I have of original/survivor 72 cars with hood pins have the cables routed between the hood and fender.

Re: Hood pin cables
I dont use any lanyards just the clips.I have a front rubber bumper and if you would loop the cable through the bumper you would get heavy scuffing with any movement.chrome bumpers might not be so bad.NOrrTH wrote: Again, does anyone running these have any scratching issues, or do you just put them on for car shows?

Re: Hood pin cables
On a side note. Mopar Action had an article about installing a set of hood pins on a Challenger(?). It gave detail instructions on how to install the hood pins with lanyards as well as the P/N for the kit. Question is: Wonder how long those cables that are in that kit?
Re: Hood pin cables
I had a chance to look at an unrestored original rubber bumper car with hood pins this weekend (thanks Scott and Kenny). No guarantee than things hadn't been changed on the car over the years, but it appeared to be as built from the factory. The hood pin cables were attached to the bumper brackets and routed around the bumper to the hood.

Re: Hood pin cables
I finally made it over to look at the gold '72 Road Runner I used to own. It's coded for hood pins on the fender tag, and the landyards are still on the car. I measured them, and they are 26" long. I have no idea though how they were originally routed. The hood pins themselves when I bought the car weren't on it. In fact I didn't realize that the cables were still on the car for a long time. As the prior owner tucked them up under the fender area. Scheduled production date of that car was September 1, 1971. Produced at the St. Louis plant. I thought about taking them off when I sold the car. But generally I don't like to do that. So I left them on the car.
