Hood Tach on a Roadrunner hood

Post by transamman » Mon Jul 11, 2011 11:49 pm

Alright now don't cuss at me- just hear me out. I imagine that you can tell by my handle that I like Pontiacs also. I love the GTO's with the hood tachs and you could get them on most all Pontiacs as well as other GM muscle. I've seen them on 4th Gen Chargers but not on a Roadrunner. 2 questions... 1-Have I just never seen them but they do exist??? 2-If they don't exist on RR's, is this just a bad idea in Moparland? I personally think it would be cool. My Satellite had a horizontal speedo and idiot lights and when I finish it, It will have a Rallye dash with no tach and this would give me a tach as well as be sharp- but this is my opinion and I'm openminded about it but I am leaning in that direction. Thoughts??

I'll answer your questions in order:

1.) They exist on pontiacs, not stock on our b-bodies. I have seen one as an aftermarket touch on a 71' Satellite.

2.) It's not a terrible idea but you are putting a Pontiac touch on a Mopar which is a bit touchy. I personally would not do it just because I can't imagine drilling into the hood to mount it. Plus consider that it will spend its life exposed to the elements where it is more prone to failure that one that would be kept in the cockpit.

As the old saying goes, this is your car and you do what you want with it. If you have the rallye dash why not spend the little extra coin to put in the rallye tach?

Thanks for the input. I had a chance to buy a black '73 Rallye Charger witha 440, console, rallye dash. It had a set of turbine looking wheels with red inserts and a red stripe midway down its side. Power bulge hood and a hood tach. It looked super. The ONLY reason that I didnt jump on it was the title issues that it had, which were mostly laziness on the owner and previous owner's parts. He wanted cash and THEN get me a title and I wanted to see a clear title for cash... I ran across it while working at a customers home(I have the type of job that allows me access to folks back yards where they keep the projects). Would've loved to have rescued that car. They eventually moved and I guess they took it with them. Motor knocked and exterior needed freshening up but it was definitely cool. In a mobile home park in Fayetteville, NC. I firmly believe that tach was factory but it was on a Dodge. But at the same time, I've about decided that where the tach should go is right about where the back end of the sideways scoop is on a RR hood and that there isn't enough space between it and the back end of the hood to mount a tach and it be proportional. An Air Grabber hood is similar in style to the Power Bulge tho... 4 small holes is an easy repair to fix back if someone decided to change it. AMC used a hood tach on the MACHINES also. They are much improved as far as dependability is concerned and they can easily be made not to fog up. But if they didn't come on the RR, then I probably won't, Although I'm sure that I could shape the tach shell to fit the contour of the hood to fit between the scoop and the end of the hood on a RR and make it look at home. But also like you said, just put a tach in the cluster. That will put me in the position of asking you guys about modifying my harness for the indash tach but I'm sure that I can count on you when the time comes. I really enjoy talking Mopar with you all -Horace

I don't recall a hood tach installed as factory equipment on any muscle mopar, but one was available through Direct Connection at the dealer parts counter. I believe it was made by Dixco.

BINGO - I personally have never seen one on a B-Body. I was thinking of adding one if I could find one for a decent price.

That wouldn't be a bingo in my book, least not on my Mopar. Just my two cents

The hood tach was also listed in the dealer parts accessory book for each of the '71 to '74 years, and not just the DC catalog. So it was possible for a savy salesman to mention it to you if the car you were looking at didn't have a tach on it. But for it to be a "factory" option. You'd have to have the paperwork to back it up that it was sold with the car. In the Antique Car Club of America they won't accept anything on a car as being a factory option in judging unless it left the dealership that way, that day. In other words. You couldn't order an option, and then go back and have them put it on the car when the part came in. My friend Joe did that with his '78 sunroof Chrysler 300. He loaded it up with 3 more options that weren't on the car at the time, and left the car there at the dealership. He told them to call him when the parts were on the car, and then he would pick it up at that time. When they asked him why he wouldn't take the car with him. He said he wanted it be be "legal" for that kind of judging. So that's what they did! They didn't date the paperwork on the car until it left. Someone earlier this year or last year on this web posted that they have a yellow '73 or '74 Road Runner with a factory hood tack on the car that evidently the dealer put on the car. They look better if they're at least painted the color of the body. If it's just the plain black. Then it looks more like a large unwanted wart to me. But I guess there is another way of looking at it. It would be a way of having a factory tach, and a factory clock in the car at the same time in the '71 to '74 B-bodies.

So is there a template floating around showing exactly where one of these was mounted? I doubt I'll ever put one on my car, but having the info might be useful to someone on here. :)

I dont know of a template but i could make one by taking my tach off and making a template if someone wanted one bad enough.

Id say the tach Idea Is a great Idea that I would also do If I didn't already get a tach for inside my car.

As far as It being touchy. Its a tach,an accessory, not a pontiac logo.
