4 speed

Cleaning the 4 speed on my '72 RR, this is what I found. My question: any way to preserve this, I would like to clean the transmission properly, I guess I can make a stent to copy it again?. Anything else I should be looking for?

I've got a spare 69' four speed that had 3 numbers like that except they were yellow.I have yet to pull my drivetrain out to see if I have any numbers like that on my original 4 speed.

As for preserving the numbers, I didn't notice the ones on the 69' version until I knocked the paint off with a wire wheel, and those numbers were not coming off without a lot of cleaning. So simply painted over them, which I figured would preserve them just like the old paint, just cant visually see the numbers. You could make a stencil and trace out the numbers so later on you can go back with a brush and paint or spray the numbers back on. Plan on doing it with my original 4 speed unit.

I did the #s on mine by tracing them--transferring that tracing using carbon paper (remember that?!) to a manila file folder. Then I cut the numbers out of the folder using an Xacto knife--taped it loosely to the side of my trans in the appropriate spot and sprayed it with blue paint. The result? Numbers back on the trans just like brand new...

First photo is of the number as it revealed itself--in the second photo you can see the result of my handiwork as the engine, trans and k-frame assembly went back into the car.

Thanks guys, I've made a trace. I am unsure about the 2nd number, it looks like a 6 or a 5??

I'd say 6. A 5 would be shaped like the 5 on mine...
