'71 383 call outs
I have a '71 Road Runner with a 383. I have a question about the engine call out on the hood inserts. The numbers are white reflective, but what about the black background? My car had (not original decals) gloss black background and reflective white numbers. What is correct? I ordered a set from Performance Car Graphics and they sent reflective black background and reflective white numbers. To me, it looks like at night when the light hits it, all you will see is white.
Re: '71 383 call outs
I just looked at my spare hood with what I think is still the original call outs. The engine lettering is white reflective, and the background is a semi-gloss non-reflective black.

RS23U1E...thanks for the reply. This is what I think they should be also. I am going to call the supplier and get a correct set.

This is one of the rare cases I disagree with David (performace car graphics). In my experience, the decal base for the 71s is reflective white with the black "background" printed on top. My survivor is this way, and others I've looked at were the same. I asked another guy that's in the know about 71s and his opinion is the same. David swears they were two layer reflective.
AKA Butterscotch71....the road runner nest is out to win you over this year!

Eric,
I just took another look at mine and that theory makes perfect sense. It is very clear that there is a slight ridge where the number meets the 'background' and there is no doubt that the black background is higher than the letter. Especially evident on the '8'. So the black is 'painted' over the white reflective background to make the letters indeed.

I had a long talk with Dave today, and he thinks that the painted, or stenciled, gloss back ground on a solid white reflective decal is a possibility. Dave is a great asset to our hobby. He is working on something for me, and he hopes to have it for me before Carlisle. That's right...the '71 will be at Carlilse. Look for it in building T.Eric wrote:This is one of the rare cases I disagree with David (performance car graphics). Re: '71 383 call outs
I got the replacement call outs today. They are just like what the car had on it, and exactly what I wanted. The 383 numbers are white reflective and the back ground is gloss, but not reflective black. They look great at night as all that lights up now are the numbers. Kudos to Dave at Performance Car Graphics. His customer service is second to none. He is truly an asset to our hobby.

Hey Dave,
If you're pretty tight with David at PCG, pleeeeease talk to him about the colors on the guage face decals for E-bodies. He's been doing them wrong forever. I've bought plenty of decals from them and the quality is usually top notch, but this one just doesn't play.
Sorry for the semi-off-topic subject.
Thanks!
