71 RR vs 72 RR

Post by 1carcrazyguy » Sat Apr 08, 2006 10:13 pm

Okay just wondering what you guys thought......

Which car would you prefer??

71 RR 383 4speed car (gold with gold interior)
or
72 RR 340 4speed car (yellow/black interior)

Saying that both cars have standard RR hood (not airgrabber) and bench seats, and otherwise the same condtion and equipment.

72 vs. 71 and the winner is.....?

Post by scottish440 » Sat Apr 08, 2006 10:31 pm

I have both cars in automatic form....and am quite fond of the 72..

72 rr is more rare from a collector standpoint
A good 340 can out perform a 383.
By far the best grille design!!!!!

71rr in defense of the 71 b-bodies...they have the best side markers....
It is hard to get past those 72 and up "tacked on marker lights"
71 year is "considered" to be the last year of the muscle car..?
The 383 will generate alot of torque...but is this what you want attached to your 4 speed

If it was color combo alone (no year difference considered) the yellow and black it the best

this is my 2 cents (probably only worth 1 cent)...scott

I'd take both!
Really depends on other things you didn't mention. Does either have factory strobe or other stripes? If the 71 was gold with gold strobe I'd be all over that! For the most part I like the 71s better, but you can't beat that 72 grille.
AKA Butterscotch71....the road runner nest is out to win you over this year!Image

I'm more of a 71 person for the sidemarkers and taillights. You could maybe put in 71 sidemarkers (I've seen some 72s with them). I guess sometimes the 72 grille looks good, but it probably depends on if it's done right-the all-silver ones don't look too great to me. (were they all like that, or supposed to be like that?)
Color-wise, I'm a big fan of anyhting different and eye-catching, including yellow, but I do love GY8 Gold Leaf Metallic.
I only have my one satellite with 440, but I have heard that 340s can be excellent-not too much difference in timed runs from a Hemi with a lot less weight (according to American Muscle Car). I was almost going to trade a friend straight up for a built-up one. I guess the performance would depend on how much emissions stuff was on there, too, wouldn't it?
My car's an auto and most of the time I'm a big fan of that (never driven a 4 speed muscle car), but my pickup has an A833 in it, but that probably isn't a good thing to go by, since it's geared so low and has half the engine (225) with 1/4 the carb  . I do like that auto when it comes to taking off. I took off today with the gas maybe 1/3 of the way down and it was like my Grand Prix at full throttle. :D
I guess if it came down to it, I'd take both too and I'd drive them all the time. Unfortunately, since mine is still "in-progress", I dont' get to drive it near as much as I'd like to.

You have to go with the big block! Although 340s can be good performers in an a-body,It is not going to out power the 383 in the same weight b-body.

71

The markers are flush and don't look so clumsy as the generic 72 and up units.

I prefer the 71 taillights to the 72's

I will give the 72 the nod for the grill. Although I flushed mine up to the bumper similair to the 68 charger 500.

I like the stripe packges on the 71 better than the 72's also.

Kinda splitting hairs though- I wouldn't kick either one out the garage.

Engine- definately a 383. The 340 is great because it winds up quicker, but it has to be wound up to produce power- where the 383 has a broader power band. That may not be so evident in a stoplight duel- where they both would be fairly even. But out on the road- in highway and passing - particularly passing- situations, the BB just pulls away.
4th generation B bodys- there is no substitute.

71/383

Given the same choice I think I would lean toward the 71/383 combo for most of the reasons already mentioned.

Not a bad choice either way!

Which ever car has the best frame rails I'd go with.
Now I don't know what the hell I'd do.

Personally I like 72 RR's better but I would always go with a big block 4-speed!
Gold is a cool color too.
Yelllow with black interior on a 72 RR would be awesome too ...but I've never owned a 340 so I'm a bit biased with big blocks!

Having owed both a 71 440 auto (clone), and a 72 340 4spd car (real deal, still in garage) I would not be able to choose. Having also owed a 70 RR 440 auto car, I know the choice between the 70 and the 72-71 cars is easy. For handling and quality of ride you just can't compare, and as far as performance they are as mean as you want to make them.

I was at a car show last year and a "gentlemen" told his son my car had no comparison to the 70 body style, apparently my car just doesn't have the performance or handling of the older cars. Yes, I knew he was sniffing glue but I didn't say anything because his son might grow up to be a decent mopar guy even though his dad was a chevy puke.

71-72 bodys are awesome!

Having built my car for *ME* and not any other group, person or show judge....

I took a 72 SSP with the 400CID, 4 Speed, Bucket Seats, Sport Console, etc....

I put the 71 RR strobe stripe on it, and have recently purchased a complete 72 RR grille to exchange for the 72 RR egg crate grille.

The end result will be pretty close to a 72 RR clone.

I enjoy the big block with the 4 speed... I have raced a 71 Sat with the 340 suto and it was not even close....
