1972 Road Runner 440-6 BBL Cars

Post by ILUV72RRs » Fri Sep 17, 2010 6:00 pm

I know that there was the red one that was pulled out of the wrecking yard years ago, and supposibly was undergoing a very slow (no $$ to do it) restoration. But have any other real ones (verified serial number) popped up over the years? Considering that there were a couple of '72 Charger 440-6 Pack cars made. It would seem that there was at least one or two more Road Runners possibly made. Before the 6 Pack option was cancelled by Chrysler. I heard rumors of one owned by a doctor or lawyer up in the Sacramento area of California years ago. But I never heard anymore after that.

The earliest production '72 Road Runner I have in my serial numbers. Was scheduled to be made July 14, 1971. Considering that this red '72 Road Runner was scheduled to be made August 7, 1971. You never know. I had some video tape from a long time ago from that large Mopar wrecking yard out in the middle of the country, and at the time they had 2 1972 440-6 Pack Chargers in the yard. Plus there was another one in the country owned by someone else. I sort of wish now that I would of maintained more interest in all of the Mopar cars and their serial numbers earlier, and not just the Daytonas, Superbirds, and Charger 500s.

I have a photo of a fender tag for a FY1 yellow 440+6 72 runner buit in Winsor with a 609 SPD, however, I'm not convinced that it's legit.

Re-reading the article on the yellow '72 Charger. Mentions the name, Ron Slobe. That was the wrecking yard where I saw the video of the cars. As I recall. One of the '72 Charger 440-6 Pack cars he had was blue in color. Although I don't know if that's the color it was when it left Chrysler. As for the Canadian '72 Road Runner. Can you post a picture of the fender tag? I know someone who's pretty good at spotting a fake fender tag from a real one.

I was at Slobes in the early 90's and took pictures and video of the red charger. At that time they told that was the only 72 6 pack car they had ever had and they knew of the yellow charger and the red road runner which I had just purchased. I have chased stories all over the country all through the late 80's early 90's about different cars and none of them ever panned out.

I tell anyone who provides tag and VIN info for the registry that I will not share the information with others. I don't recall where the info came from for this car, so I don't feel I can share the pics of the tag.
I am decent at spotting fakes, and I can tell you it has codes in locations not typical for a 71 or 72 tag. At the time of the photo, it appeared the car was painted FJ5.

Poor car, must of been a Flintstone Flyer. There's no transmission in it, ha, ha! ;^)

These cars are awesome. Would love to see one in the "flesh" sometime. I am sure you guys have seen it already, but just in case, google 1972 six pack car and a youtube video of Mike Sr at the 1985 Nats shows up. Inbetween the female distractions, Mike mentions 7 six pack cars escaping in 1972. Just something else to make you go hmmm. And on the topic of cars that shouldnt exist, Chop Cut Rebuild has uncovered the ellusive 1969 XP Hemi Charger for this seasons show. It is in very rough shape, I hope they can save it.

For the record. I have serial numbers for two Hemi 1969 XP Chargers that were made by Chrysler. One was parted out here in southern California. That was a metallic blue car. As for other possible '72 6-Pack cars. They might of wound up in a wrecking yard in the early years, and came back as Datsuns and Toyotas. As there were wrecking yards out here in the early years where they would not sell you the whole car, or a title. So I did see real hemi cars, 6-Pack cars, and T/A & AAR cars go through them that bit the dust that were perfectly saveable. :^( The only one I was able to save was a yellow '67 Belvedere Hemi car. One of those one of none cars. No, unfortunately I didn't keep it. Had to many projects at the time. Sold it to a Hemi car collector. Who sold it to another collector. Lord knows where it went from there.

Hey ILUV72RRs, is one of these 67 Hemi Belvederes in this link the one you had? Crazy what snuck out of Ma Mopars plants in the 60s and 70s.

The car I had was a yellow Belvedere II Hardtop. If memory serves me right. It was an automatic. I'll ask the guy I sold it to if he remembers anything else about the car. He may of written down the serial number for it. Since Pete is sort of a Hemi historian. I'm just glad that it wound up in a yard that would sell you the whole car and title. Although I had to pay my room mate who found the car $50.00 for the information as to which wrecking yard it was in. Yeah, I know. With friends like that. Who needs enemies, ha, ha!

My friend Pete finally got back to me. Fortunately he took a photograph of the inside of the car when it was sitting in my driveway. Turns out my memory is getting old. The car was a 4-speed, and not an automatic. He sold it to Ron Slobe back then. So it's the one in the picture on the website that has been restored. Nice to know it's alive and well. I figured back then it was probably impounded by the city. As it had a stack of parking tickets in the glovebox like you wouldn't believe.
