Ok found my parts books, September 1971 book has no support bracket listed, the other 2 books are both late 72 and show the bracket. So it must have been a mid year thing, I know my blue car was built just after the gas tank change maybe it coincides with that. So other than finding original cars with the extra tab on the valve cover we might not know.

So Larry,
I stumbled on a ’72 TSB, dated 12-15-71, about ECS hose routing that appears to apply to this older discussion about correct ’72 big block valve covers. Looks to be some concern about how close the hoses hung over the exhaust manifold and resulted in the addition of the hose bracket to the valve cover beginning “APPROX. 12-1-71”. My Feb ’72 production BB Sat did not have the clip and bracket, I believe they are the original covers but can't back it up. The original motor in my May ’72 production RR/GTX was long gone when I bought it. I assume there was a bit of lag time between engine/valve cover production and vehicle production that may explain why the Feb. car didn’t have this bracket.
