Correct me if I am wrong but...I thought the 1974 GTX's still came with the 440...although only 79 were produced. That is the number that I have come across in my readings/research.

I bought mine as a 74 GTX hood. It came with the hood pins and the gtx emblems on the cowl and the vents. So, that's where I was getting my info.

I do think the vents are there for the larger engines. The 400s and 440's were pretty well crammed in there and it can get pretty hot in tight spaces. . . (thats supposed to be hot, not mad).
I always thought that the got rid of the vents when they went to windshield squirters on the wiper arms since the squirters went through the vents. And since there is a gasket sealing the hood to the cowl I don't think those vents helped under hood temps anyway.

Funny thought.........When the GTX was born it was known as THE BOSS at all the racetracks and Plymouth used the term The Boss in their advertising until their competition decided to trade mark the term The Boss and introduce the public to the PHORD RUSTANG,,,,,Anyway Plymouth moved onto a new saying for the GTX which proved to be even better.....anyone care to take a guess at the new advertising slogan for GTX back in the day ?

Do you have a different number? And a reference? My number is out of the Dodge and Plymouth Muscle Car Red Book. Again, we are only talking about 1974 440 equiped RR's, not all RR's from 1974 (9,656 produced).

72: 672 total, 219 4spd / 453 autos
73: 749 (all autos)
74: 386 (all autos) :D

Still pretty rare there was one at a car show here for sale this summer and they were not giving it away I think they wanted $25,000.00 I liked it but it was toooooo rich for my blood. They did say it was 1 of 79 built
It was a really nice restoration.

I was under the impression that only the U code (440) roadrunners got the GTX badging from 1972-74. If it came with the 400 or less, it remained a roadrunner. So which is it? The Red Book says 79 for the 1974 model year, and the White Book says 389. Anyone else have another reference?????

I don't buy the 79 number for the 74' u-coded RR/GTX production. 386 is more in line with tapering off trending from the previous years. Fuel shortage/prices, emissions regulations, and insurance rates killed off the numbers for those who may not have experienced it.
