71 Plymouth Roadrunner Question

Hello everybody!! I needed some advice. I am a big fan of 71 Roadrunner and always wanted to own. Finally I found one and I am not sure what price I should pay.

Asking price: $2000
Condition:
Car is not running.
Body -
Rear Quarter panels rusted out(Whole quarters need to be replaced). Trunk rusted(see through). Rear window trim rusted out. Door dented.
Interior is good. Was not able to check the floor pans.
Engine: 440, fluids drained out. Unhooked but bolted. Also engine is not from the car, somebody replaced 383 with 440.
Tranny: 747.

Basically needs total restoration. Is $2000 a good price? I know without seeing a car, it is difficult to give a price but ballpark would help. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think that depending on options, it is probably high in the condition listed. I would move on and look for a better candidate. It is a good time to buy one now since the prices seem to be down.

I would disagree. That price is close enough, IMO, to haggle. The 440 (If complete) is probably worth 1k. They are going for at least that around NC. I'd bet since it is a swapped motor it probably has a few bolt on goodies. I looked at a 440 with 40k original miles on it the other day for $1200. You will always hear of that "Great Deal", but on average I would say that's not a bad price. I'd bet he'd go lower if you pressed him...especially if he hasn't been able to move it.

How much can U spend?
I'd wait and spend more on a nicer car U can enjoy now.
It may take years and MUCHO $ before U ever see the car
U describe running .
It sounds like a complete rebuild.
Body/paint.
brakes/suspension/tires.
Wiring from tail lights to head lights. dash and motor.
Rebuild motor
Don't forget new interior.

Do U have $25000 to spend on it?
or can U do all the work yourself?

Very true. In the end I think that is what this hobby comes down to...how much time vs. cashflow. It's a tough call. I'd probably pass on it for someone that wants to put in the time in to it. I don't know about everyone else, but the older I get the harder it is to find the time for such an undertaking. I bet that car would take me 10 years to finish. Though I' would try and snatch the motor if he's willing to split it up.

I'd verify that it's a legit road runner...VIN should start with RM23---------

If you check the cost of interior pieces and trim etc then you will soon see that this car is worth $1500 easy the Vin alone is worth $1000 and if it needs to much work then it would be worth getting it just for the parts,

Bottom line you could part the car for more than $1500 especially if it has the RR hood on it, posi etc

Thank you everybody for your response. Yes I did verify the VIN and it is a genuine RR. Looks like everything is original on the car except the engine. I guess it comes down to that the car needs a lot of work.

What type of hood does it have? Do you have a picture of it ? If you do not want it could you send me the guys info because I would pursue it for parts etc as I have a 71 GTX and 72 SSP and parts are not easy to find
it is worth the money for me that is for sure.

I agree with most everyone - about $1500-2000, but only worth it if you can do a majority of the work yourself or have a lot of buddy help. If you farm out the work to professional, you could easily be upside down in it if you are not careful. If you want to do a lot of the restoration and work yourself and can wait a few years for the end product - then go for it. If you want instant gratification - then you better do a little more shopping. Good luck with what you decide!!! I have been slowly working on my 71SSP for almost 4 years now, and it is tough in the waiting department. But I wanted to do a majority of the work myself.
