One person said the handle is verticle and the other guy said its a horizontal handle..I would like to know which is correct and exactly where it should be mounted...Thanks in advance...

Re: Hood release help...PLEASE
I don't have a photo, but I believe for 72 you would have the horizontal black handle release. The hood cable was a one piece.
Mounting location is the same as 71 shown in the photo

Re: Hood release help...PLEASE
I just bought a 72 satellite and it has the horizontal black handle, or i should say had, as it snapped off in my hand during my purchase inspection [ whoops, hopefully not a sign of things to come...] luckily the hood popped open just before the wire seperated ---because mounted to the hood latch support column behind the grille ---is a metal ,90 degree bend ,factory stamped piece of sheetmetal that must be there to stop prying or thieving hands from just grabbing the release cable wire from under the front valance and pulling it down.
After removing the " theif hand guard " i can cram my arm up in there and pull the wire to release the hood.
As you probably figured out, just pulling down on the black plastic cable wire sheath will not help, you have to get your fingers on the wire itself.
BEA Parts Inc ,has a hood release cable for our cars, it is the chrome handle though. I think about $ 80 dollars.
From what i gather from reading old posts, we'll need the long cable offered. They have short and long advertised if i remember right.
I can't figure how to reattach the old cable to the handle, not enough wire slack and the plastic handle seems pressed or formed around the wire anyway. Would like original black handle style, but really don't want to put a used 40 yr old cable on the car. I have that same style handle on a 77 truck, so it must have had several years of applications.

Here is a pic of the hood release on my 72 GTX. To the best of my knowledge, it has never been changed, but that wasnt one of the 1000 questions I asked the previous owner. Looks like the prior responses on here have said horizontal, but clearly mine is vertical. Which is correct? Beats me...hope it helps.

Never seen one like that. Heck, just the hood release itself is kinda rare, IMOP. It looks like to me that it might not be original, especially compared to the other members post. I did see one on Ebag (?) for sale and I'll try to find it and post it here for ya.

Re: Hood release help...PLEASE
The original cable assembly, cable broken and missing the handle, that was on my 72’RR/GTX when I bought it is stashed somewhere and can’t determine which handle it had. Pictured below is the one I’m currently running on the car, picked up somewhere while collecting parts for its restoration.

Re: Hood release help...PLEASE
The vertical handle was used on later model B bodies. Not sure if any 72s got it or not.

Re: Hood release help...PLEASE
All of the '72 RRs I've owned over the years came with the black vertical hood release, one being a Canadian built car. That was the 440 RR/GTX 4-speed car. But I did own for a brief time (bought it just for the front seat) a '72 Satellite Sepring Plus 318 car which had a chrome hood release in it. Which at the time struck me as odd. Being used to the RRs. But then since the Plus model was suppose to sort of be the luxury Satellite model. That's probably why it had the chrome knob in it. Sort of wish now that I would of kept that car for a daily driver. As like you guys have said. You hardly ever see them. Or they're cloned into a RR.

Re: Hood release help...PLEASE
My 72 ssp came with a vertical hood release. It was built in June of 72. I have an NOS release 3695565 that is listed for a 73 in the parts book that has the vertical handle. I have had 72's with both styles. They probably started to use the 73 parts late in 72.
