72 Satellite What's it Worth?

I'm tire kicking on a 72 Sat here in NC. It was a 318 car, now has cast crank 440/727. Can't hear it run because carb got stolen. 8-1/4 rear, front power disks. Bench seat has been replaced by Cordoba buckets/console. Std. dash, old column shift still there.

Rust holes in all quarter & fender lowers, a bit on the extensions as well. Frames rails rock solid, floors look good.

Don't know what the car is worth, but that 440 will probably make toast out of that 8-1/4... I'd be interested in the VIN on that trailer...

I guess it would depend upon what you want to do with the car. Do you want to restore it, make an RR clone, make a drag car / street car etc. The beauty of the '71 / '72 Satellites is that they have the same body styles as their more desirable B-body sisters and that fortunately (or unfortunately) the remaining cars are pretty much undervalued. If I had the time / storage and could convince the boss, I would buy up every '71/'72 Satellite I could find .

It would be interesting to understand what the data plate / option code / build sheet says to get an idea of how the car was delivered. I looked at the pics, but could only make out a few codes. A good guide is here:-

Restoration either way would take up a fair amount of $, but seeing more Satellites restored would not be a bad thing. I agree the 440 would tax the 8-1/4 at some point.

Yeah, that tag pic really sucks, I know...LOL. As I recall it was a HT8 Chestnut bronze car with a b/w bench interior and white canopy top.

318, auto on column, a/c, power disk, 3-speed wipers, tinted glass, driver's side chrome mirror, inside hood release, fender mtd. turn signals, AM radio, 26" rad.

Is it worth the $2k asking price?

I'm a Challenger guy at heart, but really like the 71-2 Plymouths more and more, so if I got it, I'm not sure if I'd keep it as a driver or just resell after I got it up and running.

I do have a nice 8-3/4 for it, since I used to be a big 3rd gen Charger guy.

Let's put it this way. I passed on a trashed satellite for 750. I passed on a 383RR (real RM car) that was in about the same shape for 3500....but then again, I bought my GTX for far more than that...in the same shape, if not slightly worse.

I might be buying a parts satellite (that's really a restorable car from a j-yard) for 1200 bucks...we'll see how that pans out. it's in about the same shape, with what's left of its 318.

Go with your heart. If you're going to love it for a long time, it's worth it. think about what it needs immediately.

This car has 9 1/4 rear not the 8 1/4. Note the taper in the axle tube and large brake drums. Thats a plus, it's a strong rear. Over all it doesn't look to bad. I'd take a closer look at the trunk and floors. Bring a good battery and some starting fluid if you want to hear the 440 fire up. Just don't spray to much in.(no carb) I think the question is how much is it worth to you? Sounds like this question is all ready answered. Talk to the guy, check it out a little closer and if you like it wave $1500 cash in his face.

The 8 1/4 rear end is commonly found in a-bodys, even with a 318. My friends and I refer to it as a 'potato chip' rear end because of the loud crunching noise it will eventually make when it blows up. The 9 1/4 is no better. I disagree with the last guy, it is not a strong piece. The same rear end is in use today in new Dodge trucks and fails pinion bearings and blows up all the time. You want to find an 8 3/4 or Dana 60. Remember! The 71-72 Satellite has a wider rear end than a normal B body. So get one out of one of those cars or out of an E body. Or just go to http://www.moserengineering.com and buy it all new. Good Luck cool car.

I'm guessing the 9-1/4 went in with the 440. In almost 40 years, a lot of weird stuff can happen! Hopefully the snow will melt and this damn cold will go away soon. (I have a cold and it's COLD outside.)

You're likely right. Get a car like this, and you never know who's been through 'em. If this rear end goes kablooie, I think you should toss in your 8 3/4" rear that you have on hand...That's just my opinion though.

It's cold here too, I'm not sick (knock on wood), but I'm eager to get mine out and play with it.
