Vinyl tops

Post by Smellslike1974 » Mon Nov 30, 2009 7:48 pm

Do they sell canopy or halo vinyl tops or do you purchase the full vinyl tops and cut them?I was just looking in a restoration book for dodge and Plymouth and in 1974 the only vinyl tops they have are the full tops. And that's for $116.the price isn't bad but i was just curious because saving money would be great if i can buy exactly what i need for cheaper price.

Legendary sells the full vinyl top (seams running along the roof) and canopy vinyl top (seams at the "A" pillars).
As far as a halo vinyl top in not sure.
Isn't that sort of like a full vinyl top except for trimed above the door openings.
Edit ... I see it is just like a full vinyl top with seams.

So to answer your question: make sure you buy the canopy vinyl top not a full vinyl top and have it trimmed.
Since the seams are different between the two tops.
I have a canopy vinyl top from Legendary yet to put on my car but the seams are correct for canopy vinyl top and are on the "A" pillars.

Why would it need to be trimmed?A canopy is exactly what i need.I just didnt know if they sold them.

there is quite a bit of extra material on vinyl tops, then you have to cut it to fit under the trim

This car belongs to a member of the RRNest (I think) anyway it has a canopy vinyl top on it using a full vinyl top (seams in red) and trimmed off the back half; which in incorrect.
A correct canopy vinyl top will have seam (as shown is green).

i think you can order tops however you want - what distance between seams, pillar seams, even without seams, at least according to paddock...

Mine had the seams that were mentioned. It ended right where If you followed the trim between the two side glasses It was even with that. Definitely Not original. I really don't know why someone would do that just to make It end a foot over. Unless maybe It got ripped or damaged near the end so instead of replacing they shortened It. I would have done the same.

Best pic of It I have before It was taken off.

Don't know if this helps you sl74, but here is a pic of a 74 I parted out. It had a vinyl top on it. Here is where the chrome strip was on it. Sorry I don't have a better pic.
