Re: What carbs came on 71' roadrunners?
I had a Carter on my 71 Runner with a 383 auto with the Air Grabber....Looked to be stock when I got the car in 1983. I still have a copy of the fender tag and I believe the BC sheet as well....

Re: What carbs came on 71' roadrunners?
I dont know what they had on the '71s but on the '70s they mostly had carters(well according to this). I have been looking for similar brochure for '71 but the Plymouth Rapid Transit System Brochure from '71 doesn't have the same detailed listing as the '70 does.

Actually, I have a photo of the broadcast sheet for that car, from when it was for sale in El Paso TX back in 2006. The carb code on the sheet is 42. From all the info I have, this is a Holley carb R4735 for a 383 auto air grabber car.

Re: What carbs came on 71' roadrunners?
The Factory service manual for the year in question, other than the build sheet, is the only definitive source of info on what carb. was on what motor originally. Basically for 68-69’, the Carter AVS was found on big block HP motors and Holley 4160 were found on standard performance 4bbl big blocks, mainly C-body applications. Beginning with the 70’ model year this kind of flipped, 383HP’s and most 4bbl std. per. 440s used the 4160 while the STD per. 4bbl 383s (again C-body apps.) and HP 440s used the AVS. This carried through to the 71’ model year as well, the 383HP motors had Holley 4160’s with a 1 3/4†secondary throttle bore and were rated at about 650CFM as I recall. By 72’ the Thermoquad replaced the 4160 on the 400 HPs and all 440s were still running 8 different list numbered 4160s.
Now let me share a little firsthand dealer experience with the Holley 4160 from the day. I think 67’ was the first year there were used on the 4bbl 440 c- bodies and they were problematic from the start and only got worse as the underhood operating temperatures were raised thru the early seventies. They were not well suited for the average Chrysler Imperial owner who wouldn’t service them regularly. The old cork metering body gaskets would shrink and leak, main bodies & metering bodies would warp, and numerous underhood engine fires resulted from leaking hard transfer tube o-rings/fuel bowl fittings.
You likely won’t locate the supplemental factory parts info from then but Chrysler had a program in place to replace the 4160s with Carters. There was a kit available for each 4160 app. that contained an AVS and all change over hardware (choke spring, throttle brackets, and fuel fittings). When installed would be indistinguishable from a factory installed AVS. I believe these replacement AVS carbs account for some of the confusing carb. number listings that exist today, as these replacement carbs had their own set of numbers. Under warranty, this change-over was pretty much mandated for any 4160 problems and offered as a service part for vehicles out of warranty. A lot of dealers eventually refused to rebuild the Holleys however and would only offer to change them out at the customer’s expense. I can’t tell you how many 4160s I have personally sh** canned, a lot I’m sure with some very rare list numbers today.

Re: What carbs came on 71' roadrunners?
Two separate list numbers for the 4160 standard performance 440 4bbl in the 70’ FSM, eight 4160 list numbers for the same application in the 72’ FSM and NO 4160 440 applications listed in the 71’ FSM?
Strange indeed, looks like I have to order up another FSM. Pretty sure I’m going to find some list numbers.

Re: What carbs came on 71' roadrunners?
yes is the 71 383
but per. 440s used the 4160 while the STD per. 4bbl 383s (again C-body apps.) and HP 440s used the AVS. This carried through to the 71’ model year as well ?
is for 1970 383 440 not 71 440
that why i point it out

Wow, reading back I sometimes wonder where my brain was at... even though the op of the thread asked for carb type on a 383 my brain must be wired only for only seeing 440 info.... I guess its a side effect of owning a GTX.
That link I gave clearly lists a holley for 383 and on that same site even though I said the Plymouth Rapid Transit System Brochure from '71 doesn't list carbs, I looked back and it does. It also says holley on 383 it just doesn't list cfm.
Its things like this that make me think I'm losing my mind.

Re: What carbs came on 71' roadrunners?
I have a follow on to this thread as well, acknowledging too the OP’s subject is 71’ 383 carbs but may not have been that concerned about correct list numbers.
I also found that some of the 71’ 383 HP 4160 list numbers listed on charts commonly available today are not present in the 71’ FSM. May have been service replacement or superseded carb numbers, not original to a car at the time of vehicle production.
Here is a 4668(auto non-A/G) currently running on ebay.
I did preference my original statement above with the word “Basicallyâ€, hoping to create a little wiggle room. I have since reviewed the 71’ FSM again, indeed there are no 4160s listed for any 440 application in 71’.all 71 440 4bbl lp or hp come with a avs no holleys

Re: What carbs came on 71' roadrunners?
According to the Factory Service manual for 1971 it states:
"The Carter four barrel carburetor models AVS-6125S, AVS-4966S are used on 383 and standard 440 cubic inch engines when the vehicles are equipped with automatic transmissions respectively."
"The Carter four barrel models AVS-4967S, AVS-4968S are used on Hi-Performance 440 cubic inch engines when the vehicles are equipped with manual or automatic transmissions respectively.
That was from section 14-83
"The Holley four barrel carburetor models R-6191A and R-4668A are used on the 383 cubic inch engines when the vehicles are equipped with manual or automatic transmissions respectively. These two carburetors are used with a Heated Air Intake System."
"The Holley four barrel carburetor models R-6193A and R-4735A are used on the 383 cubic inch engines when the vehicles are equipped with manual or automatic transmissions respectively. These two carburetors are used with a Fresh Air Intake System."
That was from section 14-66
If anyone would like any further info from this manual, just send me a message and I will see what I can do.
