I believe the first letter in the paint code is for the model year, and yes the sunroof cars are to have vinyl tops I think the other color code may be for the roof rail :D

I hate those little nubs. . .couldn't seem to grind them down far enough

and the crappy factory leftover work beneath that vinyl top (halo) was pretty crappy. . .

There, I feel better

Yep, only available on a vinyl roof (halo, full, and canopy).

I have a factory sunroof , 74 RR, currently vinyl, but I plan on making it a painted roof. Will there be any issues with the sunroof itself?

Hey 74rr400,

Don't be so quick to discount that your car DID Indeed come without the vinyl top. When I was back in Missouri, I checked out a real 73 Road Runner with a factory sunroof and NO vinyl top. It was original and unrestored. The Fender Tag backed this up as well. I obviously know more about the 71/72 sunroof cars. But, I do believe you could order the sunroof without the vinyl top. Remember, they switched the sunroof from electric to a manually operated one in 73. Virtually nothing will interchange between the electric and manual.

In 73, there are no restrictions listed on the sunroof and vinyl roof, but in 74 in the dealer brochures there is that restriction. Now, does that mean the 74's couldn't have come with a sunroof and hardtop? No, just like my 73 Roadrunner back in the day came with a motorized radio mast that went up and down when you turned on the am/fm. That option was offered in the Chrysler lineup for the Fury's , and I'm sure dealers could have, and did, just about anything they wanted to make a sale. Especially so when it comes to the vinyl tops. . .a lot of dealers had to install these themselves and some replaced the vinyl with textured paint. So, yep, the factory options were somewhat blurred by the dealers I would think.

Another oddity about my 73 RR from the day was the on the floor auto shifter. . .I didn't have a t-handle or pistol grip, I had the ball shifter with the chrome button. That's not supposed to be an option either, but it was there! I think that was supposed to be for the Dusters, but I had the ball!

surplus, or leftover, inventory would be my guess. If they knew it was the final hurrah for the Satty line, why invest in new stock when you can deplete the old stock you've got sitting around in warehouses.

it is a factory sunroof. its on the build sheet. car wasn't restored when i bought it. still wore the factory paint. it doesnt leak either. i did find a guy in south florida that has a 73 charger with a factory sunroof and it doesn't nor never did have a vinyl roof. he has owned the car since new and ordered it. mine was also an orgered car. wonder if that makes a difference and the roof paint code matches the body paint code. its so confusing.
