loose lug nuts

Post by teddy1500 » Tue Jun 09, 2009 7:29 pm

I got a problem. Just put some old school mags on my 1973 Satellite custom. They are uni-lug, and look like they need inserts (long gone). The keystone offset washers fit tight into the wheel, But, the lug nuts, on one wheel only (drivers front) keep coming loose, I've lost two, and a third, the stud broke as I was tightening back up. It had not bottomed out, but is seemed to bind on the wheel, and snapped.
Getting ready to replace wheel bearing, and 2 studs, Any addvice on how to keep these wheels on the car,
Would loc-tite blue work?

I had unilugs on a van in 73.
I bet without the inserts there is way too much play in it.
The movement will continue to cause damage.
I'd get another set of wheels until you can find a set of inserts.
Hate to see a wheel come off while on the road.
Those things were not too safe even with the inserts.
That's prob why they don't make unilugs anymore
Maybe a shop can machine some inserts.
I never looked but eBay might be the only place to find something like that.

i never had a problem with my unilug slot mags for the longest time (6 years), until just recently - bad vibration at slow speed - i wasn't sure what was going on - i lost 4 lugs on one wheel and 1 on two other wheels! i purchased a set of lugs and the offset washers from "lugnutking" (i think that's his name) on ebay for $40 including shipping i believe - didn't put on too many miles after that yet, but you could actually "feel" them tightening up - i'm very happy and well worth the $40
