Show me your tires

Post by BarryBum » Sun Jan 04, 2009 9:21 am

Its time to put tires on my 71. I have a new set of Rallies, 15X8's for the rear and 15X7's for the front. I am not quite sure what size tires to run. Show me your pics and tell me what size tires you are running.

while not the same, i can grab some pics of my new tires on 14X7 vintage slot mags...they used to be 225/60s front and 245/60 rears.....now they are 225/70s all around - come in at 26.5 inches, so pretty close to stock and i like how they fill up the wheel wells much better than the lower profile tires did

I had planned to run reproduction rallye wheels, ran into a clearance issue with the rear Wilwood disc brakes. These torque thrust IIs are 15x8 with a 4 ½” offset (same as the rallies I had planned) running 255/60 BFG T/As.

Up front, 15x7 with 4” offset and 235/60 tires. The 15x7 rallye wheels I have are 4 ¼” offset.

I've noticed a lot of people run a larger tire on the rear than the front. Other than having a little more traction and looking "cool" is there any other advantage? Also does it put the alignment out of whack any as it would change the caster on the front end?

FWIW I just ordered a new 2009 Challenger Spring Special SRT8. It comes with 255s on the rear and 245s on the front. I looked at one on the lot and it's really hard to see the difference.

my satellite had larger tires in the back (diameter and width)...but when i replaced them, i had them all the same size...225/70/14s...a bit skinnier than what were on it, but i don't bottom-out anywhere now and the ride is much nicer compared to the lower profile tires - imo look better too, since they fill out the wheelwells more

That's how most of us rolled back in the day, wider tires in back than front.

Most of us anyway. . .somebody will take exception if I say.. .all of us. . .

Gotta love it "back in the day"...to me that is 37 years ago!

So....how do other posters define "back in the day"?

Enquiring minds and all that!

well here's some pics of mine (finally got around to doing it)...car's still pretty dirty from taking it to work the other day :(

14" Ansen slot mags (need to pickup center caps and the correct lugs and washers - lead to an interesting day today...)....stripped them this weekend and buffed em up...still not great, but it'll do 'til i get the energy to get back to it

I got the tires this past fall...BFGoodrich 225/70-14s all around (now i can rotate them ;))little narrower, but the taller sidewall gives a much nicer ride than my 60s did
