Wheels for 71

Post by RRUNR3 » Wed Feb 18, 2009 7:46 pm

Hello. I'm asking for several suggestions on wheel selections for my 71 Road runner. Currently, she has 15in chrome 5-spoke Cragars. However, over time, the chrome Magnum 500s have grown on me. I'm real close to replacing the Cragars with them, but I'm also interested in Cragar's new gray series five spoke. Seen here

How do you feel this will look on my In-Violet Runner? About the only answer to that, is to purchase and find out. These new Cragar wheels look interesting too.

They offer gray centered as well for those.

In addition, American Racing offers these

It's a shame the wheel visualizers do not have a 71 B-Body as a selection. I'm going to run a 235/60 with a 15x7 front and I'm split between either the 275/60 or 295/50. Does anybody have photos of a 71/2 with a 295/50 series in the rear? Will a 5.5 backspacing tuck those tires in like they say? The Magnum 500s come in that backspacing with a 10 in. However, the rest do not, though I'm sure can be custom ordered. Or would an 8 in with that backspacing be better? Any one real good in photo chopping any of those wheels on my car?

Appreciate any help

These are currently for sale. 17" Telstars.

I don't own them anymore, but I'm half tempted to buy them back.

i think the gray cragars would look pretty good...don't really like the other cragars you have a link to. i'm not a fan of the 200S ARs, but the 70R (?) looks nice.

if i were going to go with 17s, it'd be the new AR slot mags...i think they are probably the best looking wheels on our cars, but i do like the ones you have linked to

As far as modern wheels go, 17in would be the limit for me. They look fine on these cars, however, I'm in keeping with the old school vibe of 15s. My 71 started off with purple steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps, but then I decided on some chrome to break up the purple; that's where the chrome Cragars came in the picture. However, (my tastes switch flavors so often, which is a problem of mine), I'm feeling the need to step away from the chrome for some gray.

Those gray Cragars really have a cool old school vibe to them. Plus they are a direct bolt wheel, which is in my top list of reasons for a replacement. If I did stick through with chrome or polish, it would be either the Mag 500s or AR T71s.

Here is my 71 with the steel wheels

Now with Cragars

Yes, I am an admire of the body color steel wheels too, however, it was time for a chance. Don't worry, I held onto them though. I didn't go all retro and toss them in the trash. Those AR Torq-Thrust D series wheels are nice, but I feel they fit 60s muscle cars better. Say a 66 GTO or 67 Coronet. Who knows though. Anyone have photos of these wheels on a 71/2?

this was my road runner when i bought it....the wheels are 15x7 with 235/60 and 15x8 with 295/50.
a 7½ is too small for a 295/50....i think 15x8 ist the smallest for this dimension. on a 7½ is better a 275/60...

Gionni, thanks for that photo. That's what I'm looking to see. Would you happened to have any more photos of your 71 with those tires and wheels? Real sharp looking. I've seen your 71 on youtube videos. Sounds great! Have any photos or information on the black 72 next to your car?

Being able to visualize helps my decision a whole heck of a lot. Anybody else have any photos they wish to share? Just looking to see how the 295/50s fit and how any gray 15in five spokes will look like on this body style.

My vote is for the second rim "link" you posted. The type that look similiar to the old Hurst 5-spoke rims. That said, I just installed 15" Magnum 500s on my 71 RR. See below for reference.

Ronnman, that was the wheel choice I was going to go with myself, but then I saw Cragar is now offering direct bolt S/S wheels in all aluminum. Right here.

I certainly would not recommend purchasing any wheels from them, since they always seem to be over priced.

That certainly perks my interest. Those Mag 500s look great for that body style though. Have any more photos?

Gionni, thanks very much for those photos. That is what I was looking forward to seeing. Would you happen to remember the backspacing for those wheels? An 8in with the 295/50 tucks in nice inside those wheel wells. Real nice stance too. Appreciate that. :)

your welcome!

rear wheels are 15x8 with 4.25" backspace. front wheels are 15x7 with 3.75" backspace.
wheel wells and body were complete stock, and with the 295/50 NOTHING rubs anywhere...

Gionni,

Appreciate those specifications, that was the information was looking forward to seeing. Looks real good. Hopefully that 295/50 will work well with a 15x8 with 4.5 backspacing. The 15x7 I was eying up has 4.25 backspacing. Thanks again. :)
