Door VIN / Restoration Question

Post by 72 RR fan » Wed Dec 31, 2008 10:50 am

I have been thinking about this...
I have never been a fan of the VIN being on the door, rather than the door jamb. My driver's door is very marginal on my car. When I resore it, I may want to replace the door. Of course, I loose the VIN. I'm sure those decal stickers were made to come apart if pulled off when new. Reproduction ones? I doubt it - illegal. Cut out the metal of the door and weld it onto the replacement door? Fun. Or maybe spend too much time on a door with some rust issues. I'd really be more prone to repairing a sorry panel and keep the VIN.

What do most folks do in this situaton?

Don't cut the metal, get a repop one. Contact www.ecsauto.com or its www.ecs.com. They make EXACT repro decals what you're looking for. They need a copy of either broadcast sheet or fender tag before they make it. They are also a sponsored vendor over on Moparts.com (if not a member, maybe you should join? :) ) Anyway, contact them and they'll tell ya what you need to do so they can make it for you.

Here,s one for a 71. I see them quite often for other years. If I remember correctly the nos ones are two pieces, there is a clear film sticker that goes over the door vin. sticker.

Looks good. You are right, I think about the film over the decal. The ebay item would work as well but to put the vin number in, let alone the correct type of lettering, would be hard to duplicate. I've seen what ECS does and they are VERY correct :)

I just received my replacement door label from ECS. Address should be http://www.ecsautomotive.com . I recommend them.
BTW I believe that label was considered more a safety info/production date label rather than an official VIN identification.
