383 bolts

Post by Confederate1969 » Fri Aug 29, 2008 11:42 pm

I hope I am correct in my assumption that Chrysler didn't change bolt sizes from 1969 to 1971 on the 383. I have a 383 that I need to pull out of a car for a rebuild. The engine is out of a 1969 Road Runner. I need to know what size bolts to put into the heads in order to hoist the engine out. I am also curious what size bolts to use to secure the engine onto a stand. I have looked high and low on the internet and I can't find any straight answers on this question. Thanks for any help you all can provide!

Welcome!

I don't know either so I won't guess.

Good luck.

After asking around for weeks about bolt sizes for the engine pull, I finally gave up since it would seem no one has ever pulled a 383 out before. lol .. So I just started trial and error with different bolts till they fit. Turns out the correct bolt to stick in the heads in order to pull it out with a chain is 3/8in. I went and got a pair of US Grade 8 3/8in x 2in bolts and some good metal washers. Had the engine unbolted from the transmission and out on a stand within two hours.

I think we all have, but we just remove the intake, go to Autozone and rent the puller-thingie (it may even come with bolts, but I wouldn't trust them since they've probably been used many times), and use grade 8 or better intake bolts.
