the 60s-70s are back...DOUBLE PUMPER

Post by landon1 » Sat Jul 19, 2008 3:46 pm

got my double pumper in the mail yesterday - tried to install it last night but had some problems...moroso drop base air cleaner that was on my holley before doesn't fit a double pumper. the timed spark vacuum port had a plug in it (instead of a barb), fuel line interfered with coil mounted on intake, and at start-up it was revvin around 2500-3000 rpm

so, i picked-up an edelbrock pro-flo air cleaner (i never really liked em, but it works and seeing one in person isn't nearly as bad), a barb fitting to hook-up the distributor vacuum advance, and re-mounted coil on fenderwell...then i started it up - at first it idled well, but when i went to rev it up, it went back to idling at 3K...well, the flippin kickdown linkage was sliding over, sticking the throttle open...fixed that and now it runs great

just got back from a test drive and i like it a lot better than the vacuum secondary holley that was on it before - instant power at any rpm...now i have to get some more chrome under-hood, intake, cam, gears, stall converter, and i'm thinkin purple hornies...and i'll be set

Whats wrong with the throttle return spring?

You are missing this:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MOPAR-Bi ... 0252676354

WhenI was young I knew an old lady who had a 68 roadrunner, her return spring broke, she did not have the sense to throw the car in neutral and stop it,so she went up a curb and straight into a brick wall totalling the car.she got taken to the hospital but she was ok.I since learned that they make a dual spring for that reason.

I nearly burnt my 70 charger to the ground with one of those air cleaners, if your carb backfires they go up like a roman candle. Just luck I had a hose nearby. Once it caught fire it quickly fell apart and engulfed the whole engine bay. I like the looks of them, but be prepared.

Not trying to contradict or be rude, but I would consider the throttle-return spring a priority. $20 spent now for a spring/bracket assembly is cheaper than a smashed up Mopar or even the people/things you will hit as a result of the ensuing accident (or even your own injury). At least get that spring replaced, wow... A good generic source is Spectre Performance at Kragen. And I agree about the two-spring thing, either one inside the other or adjacent. I've heard too many stories in my lifetime of these springs either flying off, breaking, or just giving out.

i'd never seen double springs til i got my 78 dodge pickup that had them stock - never had a problem with that single spring...

anyway, i got the one pictured above - it's on the way, as i may be picking up my torker intake in the next week or so... i really wasn't planning on getting a new air cleaner and all that other stuff too, so after i knew what i needed i was just going to order it all at once, but luckily oreillys and arnold's had everything i needed except for the springs - they could order them at 30 bucks, but i got this set on the way for 15 total including shipping.

when i do the intake, i'm going to have to strip the motor and re-paint it, as while changing the carb, i spilled gas and it bubbled and peeled quite a bit of paint...have to re-wrap my wiring, too - lots of stuff that i haven't had time to do yet ( i work about 70 hrs/wk now) ...soon, it'll be time to re-do exhaust - thinking purple hornies with pipes dumping just before rear axle or maybe coming out at a 45 degree angle in front of the back tires......then it's going to be time for tires and maybe cragar s/s wheels......lots of stuff planned prior to doing the paint all over again WOOHOO

There is one on ebay now
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mopar-B- ... enameZWDVW

I bought one off ebay and in the past made one from some 1/8" aluminum. It relocates the coil in front of the caburetor and mounts the coil horizontally.

Its hard to see your fuel line in that pic,I think landon wants to put it vertical. On the 440 sixpaks I see that they have a bracket to place it on the left side of the carb.
