To Clone or Not to Clone

Post by DixieSatellite » Mon Feb 18, 2008 7:26 am

Hi,

Wow - again, not wanting to hijack the thread but thanks for the compliments on the SSP.

Now I have a dilemma - body and paint is also on the schedule and I was planning to change the car a little, but nothing that is not in 1972 brochure, however (the color is in fact Spinnaker White w/ Argent Silver, not Ermine White). I never really liked the color scheme and was going to remove the Argent Silver and make the car all Spinnaker White w/ black vinyl roof and Go-Wing (plus body contour pin stripe).

However, now I will have to think VERY seriously about keeping it the car the orignal factory color scheme, especially if the Wedding Cake Pack is not common.

I think it's a great combination....I'd keep it as original because it isn't something you commonly see!

Besides, I'm a big believer in doing the original paint unless the car is a total frame up job. I don't think it's very cool to see another color in the trunk or door sills.

I can't imagine what that white on white SSP looks like, though! I'll bet it would turn heads at a show...
Here it is.

Roof is in fact white (Santa has also since brought the Mopar Bullseye Caps for the 7 x 14 Magnums).

Man, I LIKE that!

I really like it, too.

I'm not one to subscribe to the sometimes tiresome and shrill 'IT MUST BE FACTORY ORIGINAL!!!' advocates, but in this case, I think your car is sufficiently unique that it not only might help its value to keep it as originally ordered due to rarity, but it's one of those 'so they made one like that, huh?' cars. Unlike my GY8 Satellite with Light Gold interior and full vinyl roof, which they probably made quite a few of in 1971... So I have no problem 'making it not original' by deleting badges, the vinyl top and redoing the interior in black.

To Clone or Not to Clone

Post by DixieSatellite » Tue Feb 19, 2008 6:49 am

Hi,

Again, thanks very much for all your valuable feedback. I guess that settles the paint issue. I will redo the car original Spinnaker White / Argent Silver as per factory.

Quick question re. interior - are white repro interiors bright white only, or also available in off-white? My interior is all off-white, just like the rest of the car (Spinnaker White in floors / trunk looks like Vanilla Ice Cream).

Another bit of trivia is that the build plate specifies 2-BBL carb (can't recall the code), but the car was delivered from the factory with a 4-BBL TQ on a spreadbore manifold (unless i am wrong about this - feel free to correct me).

The TQ died in Phoenix outside Mesa Autozone in 1992 when I was driving the car back across country.

Thanks.

What is a clone??

One is just taking a car and making the way that they want it to look and perform. Its a visually or performance enhanced vehicle, made the way you want....

Now taking a Satellite and swapping VIN and fender tags from a Roadrunner or GTX then trying to sell as one of the mentioned is fraudulent.

But keeping the car with its original markings intact, but dressing it up the way you want....that is what the hobby is all about....JMO
It's a fine line between a hobby & mental illness!

Your car appears to be the exact same color as mine. My fender tag paint code is EW1.......which I believe is Alpine White.............sort of off white. GW3 is sno-white and is very white and is the color that I THINK mine will be painted next month.

If that was the case, why do clones sell more than the cars the clone from?
Cant say its because of the work done, because you could do the same amount of work to a satty without the rr disguise and it wouldnt sell as close to what a rr disguise satty would.
People have it in their minds that everythings about rr's,they forget about the satty's ...
<-- Im actually sadder than that ,but theres no smiley face to represent my feelings,

I have this question....

Lets say your at a car show with your most favorite vehicle..

for you i guessing it would be a 71 GTX? :)

And at the end of the show, the guy next to you has a Road Runner cloned GTX,and he wins a trophy for lets say "best GTX"..

You wouldnt have a problem with that at all?
That a fraud GTX won a trophy over your original real GTX?

I mean If clones are gonna over run the originals there should at least be some sort of rules, for the best in show, have a best clone or whatever.
that way its fair.
And if you dont attend car shows.....well your missing out!,ha ha

I actually had that very thing happen to me last year with my 69 RR. I was beat by a 69 RR clone...........that didn't bother me that much. What did was the fact that the car was not even close to being as nice as mine. A few people expressed their feelings when they got their trophy...including teh guy that won. But, still got beat by a clone.

I've seen where alot of judges are not in the know about Mopars and if a clone is represented as the real McCoy, the judges wouldnt know one way or the other....I am not overly concerned with my car VS. someone elses....I am a hobbyist, not a trophy collector....if I were a trophy collector, I would race it/them....
