71 GY3 GTX... sold

I’ve kept this pretty quiet up until now, but after today, the GTX will officially be someone else’s problem. I received final payment today. It’s a done deal.

Unofficially, I still have to get the Dana 60 back under it after having it rebuilt. I’ll do that tomorrow. Then I have to get it out of my garage. No word from the transport company yet on that issue.

I refer to the car as a “problem”, but at this point it’s all sorted out. It’s a very good car. I just have got too much money tied-up in it. The new owner should be very pleased with it though.

Meanwhile I’m still chasing leads on a replacement 71 or 72 Plymouth. I’ve had a few trickling-in, in response to both my “wanted” ads, and word of mouth. With the exception of one car that I came up a few dollars short on, nothing real promising has surfaced yet that matches my criteria.

The cars do seem to be out there though, so patience should pay-off. I have no real deadline; although as spring approaches I’m likely to grow increasingly impatient. I’m also considering going on the Hot Rod Power Tour again this year, but getting a car tour-worthy in the next couple of months would be a tall order.

My wish list includes (pretty much in order of importance):
· Bucket seats/décor group
· No green, B5 blue (except maybe with white interior), or “earth tone” colors.
· Air Grabber
· 4 Speed
· 340-powered

I’d probably compromise on any single one of those items (other than buckets). Looking for a very nice, affordably priced, rust-free, driver-quality car.

Just had too much money in it after all the troubles. Needed to free up some funds. It was a mistake to buy the car in the first place.

My two cents (maybe more like $0.01)...

I've bought and sold cars after they became a headache.

Financially, you guys scratching your heads are usually right -- it doesn't make money sense to buy, for example, a $15K car, put $10K into it and then sell it for $18K or so. Of course I have no idea what this GTX sold for, but here's my own recent experience...

I got a Jaguar XJ6 - a '94. One of the better years for their base six, but not one of the better years for overall build longevity. The front end needed a rebuild, new brakes, shocks, system computer, A/C, some wiring and the biggie, the diff was shot. On a Jag, the diff is a serious project and it cost about $2000. All told, I was into that Jag about $8000. I sold it for $4500.

WHY? Well, the fact is, the car still needed work - and I was sick to death of it. It would just continue to be a money pit with little returns in terms of its value, so I decided to cut my losses. I just didn't like driving the car and finding all the new things that needed doing. It's a kind of emotional thing apart from the financial, too. It's like the car is betraying you or something... Like you've done all this work and it just keeps letting you down. At some point, you want a divorce.

I'm not saying that was how this GTX went down, but I know that's how I feel when I have a car that just seems to be one failure after another. You just don't want to wait around for that next shoe to drop.

All that said, it looked COLD there! I'm in CA, born & raised and I can't imagine not being able to drive a musclecar pretty much all year 'round. Of course, I live in Marin County, where you're far more likely to see a Prius or Lexus than Mopar (in fact, they're rare as hen's teeth around here - one reason I wanted one).

Well, I hope you find a good replacement! A new relationship is always fitting to start around Valentine's Day.

I’m not looking to replace it with an identical car. That would be stupid.

Some of you guys are making the assumption that I was free and clear on that GTX (or the related expenses).

I sold a show-pony worth “X” amount.

I am looking for a driver-quality car worth “X” minus “Y”.

“X” goes in the banks short term. Debts get paid. Interest charges are reduced. Cash flow improves.

“Y” stays in the bank earning interest, or get spent on whatever necessities that might arise.

Finance 101 guys. It ain’t rocket science. Not sure why I'm even wasting my time giving you knuckle-heads an explanation. Jeez.

It makes complete sense to me, been there done that. When My well went dry, I had to sell off everything I had, included a mint 73 VW Superbeetle that my grandmother handed down to me. Sometimes you have to do whats gotta be done, sometimes you have to let go of what you really want and enjoy for the good of the family. After the smoke cleared, I had a few bucks left and bought another car. I did lose a bunch of nice ones in the process, but gained a really nice one, even in better condition that I let go (the 71 Satellite).

I did that same thing a few years ago too. I was into mini-trucks, had a fully customized, sweet Toyota Pickup all bagged and with tons of bells n whistles. My kids needed a backyard to play in, I didn't have the money but did have the truck and some gardeners that wanted the truck. I traded a vehicle I had spent tons of time and money on to have a third of an acre fully landscaped. I would hope when I die, my family is at the bedside......I know a hunk of metal (for all intents and purposes) will not be there on that day.

Why give the guy a hard time? He did what is right for him.
