Black runner pieces around taillights on a 72 broken tabs

Post by linemup » Mon Jan 28, 2008 11:38 am

I took off the two rubber black things that go around both taillights and the screws all broke off......leaving NONE to mount them back with. I know I am not the first this has happened to. I am getting my rear bumper blasted as it will be body color paint. Any suggestions on how to get these to re attach? JB Weld them?

Bumper guard

I assume you are talking about the Bumper guard. Those almost always break off. I have never tried it but I believe the back is all metal. Could you drill and tap the back and use short machine screws? Or if you are lucky try and find used ones with at least a couple studs left on. I have only seen a few NOS ones in many years of looking.

Or weld the holes shut and leave the bumper guards off for a cleaner look!

I like the way the painted rear bumper looks with the bumper guards. The front bumper when painted and with the black front guard looks pretty sharp too. Do whatever tickles you, it's your car. In my opinion they all (RR's and GTX's) should have had the elastomeric bumpers.
Maybe to reattach it you could drill out the old and insert a threaded nut insert and epoxy or JB it. That way you could remove it if need be not to mention it would be allot more secure.
I was going to try and reproduce one of them because one of mine is not in good shape at all. I think they are the same for both sides. Yea, there are allot of things I need to do. I need a month of free time so I can get caught up.

Oh, what does the front bumper guards look like...........I don't have those on my front bumper for some reason. I noticed a few slots that had nothing in them. I guess I need to find some of those in my search for used bumper parts.

The front guard is only a straight piece that goes between the lights on the lower middle portion of the Bumper.

I looked in the basement for the used ones and right now all I see is the NOS ones. I do have 2 rear bumpers with guards on them and 1 front bumper with a guard on it. If someone needs them I can try and get them off without breaking all the studs.
