Guys, I'm thinking of building a 440. I have access to one locally real cheap, unmolested. Do you guys recommend synthetic, and which weight?

I was told to not use synthetic till after the breakin of the engine,then use synthetic.10w40-30

It depends but if you are using a flat tappet cam i would not use synthetic.Read the last paragraph from this crane cams bulliten:

You also might consider an additive that contains zddp (zinc), helps lubricate the lifters and other parts.
