Starter Question

Post by rthrbfishn » Sat Dec 12, 2009 1:04 am

I bought a mini starter for my 440 project (fits a 92 dakota, Oreilly part)
The top mounting hole looks to be a 1/2 inch hole in the starter, just like the larger stock origional. The hole in the bellhousing for the upper hole takes a 7/16 bolt with a nut on the back to tighten. the bottom appears to be a threaded 7/16 hole in the bellhousing.
My question is, is there a bushing in that upper hole to take up the slack?
I also vaguely remember a starter shield or dust plate that goes between the starter and bellhousing, I can't find anything in my box of parts (tore it apart in 2005, go figure)
My camera quit working today, sorry no pics. I was bummed about that because the engine finally went back in. It looks great!
Thanks for any help...(again!)

i think the upper bolt just sticks out the back of the nut a bit - no bushing, unless there's a washer - i don't remember

there is a shim that goes between the starter and trans - idk if you need it, but i would assume that it wouldn't be there if there wasn't a reason

here's a pic from 440source - the shim is similar to the one they sell for mini starter, but the stock one has a larger opening for the nose to go through

thanks, found a dust shield online. I bet there wasn't one there when I took it apart.
