Another new 71 owner

Post by Midnight_Rider » Fri Nov 04, 2016 1:26 am

Just thought I'd register & say 'hey'... been lurking a bit here & there for the past few weeks checking out the site.

I went to look at a 72 Charger not long ago and ended up coming home with a 71 Road Runner instead. We've had a few Mopars in the family over the years, but none for quite a while now & none that weren't "just transportation" at the time. So yes, I'm pretty much a noob in that regard. Bear with me :)

Anyway, it's fairly rough but solid, and mostly complete aside from the missing 383/auto. Sounds like a good excuse for a 440 with OD to me.

Don't expect a flurry of restoration activity on this one for a bit... unless I sell my "other car" to finance the build (69 Mach 1). Anyway I thought I would post up a few details and "de-cloak".

Welcome home. That will be a nice car when you get it back to life. Your car and my car might have seen each other, as mine build date was Apr 28. Bark blue need a white top.

Welcome to the board!! - a lot of good information is found here.
Every body has their own pace when it comes to restoration.
Take the restoration I'm doing right now - slow and somewhat steady ... :D

Crazy - same exact color combo and canopy top as my project 71 Satellite! Good luck with the build and yes, a lot of help and info on this site. The search function will dig up a lot of good threads.

Thanks fellas.

Well, I ended up buying a 440 to rebuild a couple of weeks ago. Space is tight right now until the Mustang sells, so I grabbed a 727 with a missing pump last weekend on the cheap so I could bolt it to the engine & drop 'em in the car for winter storage. I want overdrive, but this will do for my present purposes.

It's a 75 motorhome engine. So I tracked down a 402 pan. That should work to get it in the car, right? If so, I will need a different oil pickup eventually if I don't get a different, higher-capacity pan down the road.

The guy who painted the Stang is supposed to come over next weekend & take a look at the RR. I am both anticipating & dreading this, lol. Have a feeling I may end up learning a lot about doing auto body prep work in the near future -- to save him as much grunt work as possible (and me as much money as possible).

Anyway, that's the update for now. Clipping right along at a snail's pace, but at least there's movement.

Overdrive is great. What you could do is keep an eye out for a used gear venders overdrive unit.

If I recall correctly the motor mounts will also have to be changed for it to bolt in. The exhaust manifolds are also different, but I don't know if that will be an issue to just bolt it in for now. I have a 78 motor home motor, just sitting on a stand right now until I figure out what direction I'm taking with my car. ☺

There's one on CL in my area right now for $1600.

I'm not in a position to jump ATM though, haven't decided for sure what way I want to go... and if I do a GV, I'd prefer a shorty version anyway.

Appreciate the input. I was wondering about that.

Yeah, that is the agony & the ecstasy of the planning stage -- every option is possible until you do something... then, it can only be what it is, lol.

I'm assuming you were asking Alf, but I updated my profile just in case & it needed to be done anyway.

A for overdrive here is a link you should check out. He went with the ultra bell but you can get conversion plates also.
