"Show Car" on fender tag.

Post by krwfarms » Sat Jul 02, 2016 11:47 am

Has anyone seen fender tags like these? Some of it we can make out but what does Show Car and Job No mean? The car has a lot of options on it but none of them are on the tag. Friend of mine just picked this car up and is looking for more info on it. Couldn't find a build sheet in it.

It's just what it says, the car was built for show and advertising by the factory. Special car, but how special, I don't know.

Zowie! Exceptionally RARE as a surviving factory show car. I see "RP23", making it a Sebring Plus. If it hasn't been hacked on (modified, cloned, etc.), and retains the original drivetrain, it has potential high value. What a great find. I'm jealous.

Could be one of those promotional cars that the factory used to just "show" the car at dealerships and or maybe commercials? I'd say "rare" indeed too. Got more pictures of it?

Keep all of those pictures showing documentation, as you probably know. Have pictures of the motor, Etc? Have you figured out if it is original motor?

I could be wrong but if it is a "Show car", it might not have a broadcast sheet. I'm not doubting that it's not a show car, just to be clear. I think they threw left over parts on a car and sent it out the door from the factory.

BTW- I see the floor mount cassette player, mine has it as well. I was told there were 137 cars with that option.

Holy cow man! Your friend snagged a great car! He has one of the first - if not the first - Satellite Sebring Plus built for the 1972 model year. This is a Pilot car - and one of the first cars that went down the line to see how the assembly process was going to work on the new model. Check out the VIN - RP23G2G100002 - the second car at the St. Louis assembly plant to get an assigned VIN! (The first would have been 100001). These early Pilot cars were usually loaded up with accessories to see how everything fit and functioned - but yes - not a whole lot shows up on the tag. A build sheet would be great - but with it being a Pilot car - car guys know that they were typically full of optional equipment. With the show car tag - this car likely did some show time - and maybe is featured in some magazines and possibly some brochures. Start looking around for those.

Now with all this being said - does having a pilot car add value? Yes - IF you can find the right buyer that is in to that kind of thing. If it were a Road Runner, or would have been car 100001, then the premium would be a little higher. Never-the-less, it is still a great car! Keep us informed on the progress - and definitely have your friend keep this one a stock build.

Scott.

Thanks Scott. I was referring to a pilot car in my response and wasn't sure about the sequence thing but you triggered my memory. I must be getting old :(
