Post by DixieSatellite » Fri Jun 25, 2010 10:54 pm

Hi,

Any idea how many of these cars were built or any way of knowing how many are left?

Thanks,

Ian B.

10,700 SSP's in 71, but don't have any driveline breakdowns on that.
21,399 SSP's in 72, no driveline breakdown either.

How many are left? No idea really. 10-20% maybe? I will say you don't see them at shows - restored as SSPs - very often. I've seen a few done as GTX or RR clones. That's why when I finally get around to doing mine, it's absolutely going to be restored right back to her fender tag.

Hmm. Would that be registered / on the road or total remaining? Attrition sure takes its toll.

Any ideas on what % of GTX / RR on the road are currently clones?

I am trying to work out how rare my car is now (I also have a 400-4BBL SSP). I am also trying to work out whether Satellites should be bought when they come up for good $$$.

Thanks,

Ian B.

I was thinking actual survival rate, but really there's no way to know how many are really left.

I bought my SSP 6 years ago now. I think I paid $3500 for it, and felt I got a really good deal on a mostly unmolested, #'s matching 383-2bbl car. I'd say if you see a decent 71/72 B-body come up for sale at a good price, grab it if you can - regardless of the model. They sure aren't making anymore of them.

I often wonder how many cars like mine are left out there. 71 RR FJ6 paint 4 speed and an air grabber. Only about 1530 left the factory with air grabbers. Less the half where 4 speeds and i think about 275 cars painted FJ6(sassy grass). I think it's safe to say not many. I do see a lot of clone cars on ebay etc. Makes you wonder are the reel ones that hard to find?

I know where there is a 71 sebring plus. I talked to the guy a year or so ago and he didn't want to sell it. I might have to bother him some more about it. :)

While there are known production numbers for individual options, it's a stretch to assume you can arrive at a number for cars with certain combinations (such as FJ6 air grabber cars with a 4spd) based on the individual option percentages. It's possible (not probable) that every FJ6 car had an air grabber and a 4spd.

The winters and crushers and accidents took care of most of them

Just picked up a 71 SSP. 383/727/8 1/4 w/ 2.45's.Power discs, buckets, console, rally dash w/ clock. When I got the call I figured it would be a parts car. Paint is really faded and surface rusty. Popped the hood and it's FJ6  I think I found one of those non-roadrunner roadrunners :D Now I have a predicament, I don't have the room for another project and I don't want to part it. Oh, and I have been in contact w/ the original owner, who is getting me a replacement title, and the car has an interesting history, starting with the lot damage at the dealership that one of my friends and his dad worked at :o So I guess I have the same question- how many were made like this?
Oh, and by the way nice site

I have taken my 72 SSP to many car events and Yes you are right you never seem to see another SSP but now I have been stricken with the GTX bug. I am now cloning my SSP into a GTX.....WHY ? The reason I am changing it is because I always wanted a GTX and although my SSP is nice I think it's value as a 318 car can not be that great. Anyways because I never plan on selling my car I thought I might as well ENJOY it as a GTX clone right down to the 440 engine. You only live once so you might as well live it.

I remember looking at an auto price guide one day and noticed that a SSP in #1 condition was only $3000 less than a RR in the same condition.

Hey I agree with you 100% you just do not seem to see them at car shows and I always liked people coming up to my car wondering what type it is even though I am parked besdie a couple of roadrunners. I have had people mistake it for a cuda or charger. I will keep all my SSP gear including he engine/tranny but because the 318/904 combo needs to be rebuilt I thought I would just put in the 440/727 combo and have a little fun with it. I think that's what I will do leave it an SSP but have a little surprise under the hood
