Also ask how many received a chrome hood release handle and how many received a black handle!
Remember the Beltstrip differences and they both had the same part number!

The book has been wrong!
Exactly,The service parts listed in the parts book are not always the same as all production parts!

Nick
Sorry I haven't sent over any photos yet. Things have been very busy the last few days.
You just had to quote me huh :)
One correction, the resonator tips only came on HEMI cars and 440+6 cars coded for N42 and N97. All other 440+6 cars did not have resonators.
I still believe factory design was for short tips on GTX and road runner. I can imagine a scenerio where they run out of parts on the line and use whatever is available...or the line worker makes a mistake and installs the wrong tips.
Just in case anyone is curious, here's a set of NOS rear pipes for an N42 (tip) coded car.

My two cents. I bought my 72 RR 400 in 1975 from a cousin. I had known the car since new and it came with the short exaust tips. Hope i kept it but that's another story.

I am off to SEMA so I am not able to check the thread but every night.

Question - Look at the first 4 pics I posted, do they all look to be the same length or are my eyes worse then I thought?
When I get back from SEMA I will take more pics of my car and try to duplicate the same angel and distance as the 2 Black and 1 Yellow cars, these cars just seem like they all have the longer tips on them.

I'm pretty sure the Yellow GTX has the short tips

I'm pretty sure the distance I illustrated isn't from the camera angle

that black GTX you posted the pic of its hard to see the size of the tip from that angle but if its the same one TX9GTXN96 linked to the tips look like shorties to me. Can really be hard to tell.

I have photos of that car when it was a fresh resto...looks like it hasn't been that well cared for since.

If I remember correctly (someone correct me if I'm wrong), there are two locations the tip hangers can be bolted to the frame rails too.

There are two locations on both inner rear frame rails that are punched to accept a u-nut to mount the tip hanger or tail pipe hanger. With tips, the rearward location(with the extra hole) was used to support both the tailpipe and tip using the tip mounted tab. The other location (two hole) , about 10” or so forward IIRC, was used to anchor the turn down tail pipe hanger and was simply clamped to the pipe. This location will not except the oringinl style tip support, requires three holes.
The TTI 3” tail pipes on my RR/GTX are supported with what appear to be repo tip supports (does not need three holes however) mounted to the forward locations and tabs welded to the pipes. No need for the TTI repo tips to have the support tabs the originals have.
