A/C vacuum can

I need to know if the a/c vacuum can is a nessisity to run the a/c. I also need the schematic/picture of where the vacuum lines go. I've looked on ebay for one but no one seems to have one. I saw some for a Mustang but I dont know if it will bolt up in the holes as the original. Any help will be appreciated!
