Help NEST:
I saw a '71 GTX at a show. Inside the engine compartment, there is a Temp Control Valve on the passengers' side with a p/n 3441561 on it. What is the valve for? I've never seen it before. Didn't know who the owner was to ask.
Also, Did the '71 440 RR only come with 6-packs? I mean, you couldn't get the 440 withouth the 6pack. AND about the hoods: Did the 440 6-packs come with the airgrabber hoods or could you get the standard hood with the call outs or the airgrabber hood? I didn't think the 6-pack aircleaner would clear the standard hoods. I've seen only the airgrabbers with the 440 6packs until I saw a car on e-bay for sale. This one had the standard hood with the 440 6pak.
Thanks for any help on clearifying this for me.

Not sure about the valve, but you could only get a 440 with the six pack in the Runner and the air grabber was an option (N96). I would say you'll see more six pack's with the air grabber than not, although I have seen a few with the standard hood. If you wanted a 440, you had to order a GTX (standard engine).

That valve would probably be the heater control valve that lets the hot coolant from the engine get to the heater core, if that's what you're talking about-with heater hoses and should also have had a vacuum hose. Sometimes they look strange. I've never seen one that looks like mine yet-at least not while looking at 71 parts. I do believe you could get a Roadrunner with a 440 4 barrel starting in 70. In 69, you could only get the six pack at mid-year. I've seen some and I know you can get the hood and fender decals for the runner, cuz I have some on my car.

As already stated, the 440 was only available as a six barrel for 71 on the road runner (and all road runner years before 71). To get the 440 in 71 you would have to buy the GTX. In 72, the GTX as a separate model went away and became a package on the roadrunner that included the 440 4bbl engine.
The air grabber hood was only standard with the hemi engine for 71, and an option for all other engines. I know of quite a few 71 440+6 cars with the standard sport hood (both road runners and GTXs). The six barrel air cleaner has no clearance issues, however it is slightly different. On the non-AG cars, the air cleaner has a wind deflector that runs along the front side an shields the filter element from debris and rain water kicked up from the fan. AG cars did not have this deflector.
As for the temp control valve, was this an air conditioned car?

Technically yes, you could get a 440 4bbl in a '70 roadrunner...Superbird only. The VIN numbers on a superbird go RM23U0. The control valve you're talking about is the stratoatventilion on non air conditioned car. h31

I wasn't sure what a stratovent heater valve would look like, but there weren't very many cars like that, correct? I think I've seen a few on the internet-mainly chargers and bees. They had a special dash insert too, didn't they? I got to thinking today, since you said temp valve, maybe it could be the Air Temp deal. I think that was a type of A/C.

Actually strato-vent was H41

On the AC and Stratovent equipped cars- that engine coolant valve is standard.
71 had this big bulk black and red valve. 72 and up used a much more compact unit

Maybe it's because my car was built pretty early, but I've never seen a heater valve for a 71 like mine. It's small and almost looks like a fairly large fuel filter on a swivel with the four tubes for the coolant and A/C, I believe, and a vacuum hose on top-can't find the hose for it though.

Was the 70-style more like that? The 71 style I see are always pretty big.

Thats if it still has the original equipment. The original 71 unit used phoenolic plastic just like the black section of the Thermobogs. It tends to have a shortlife resulting in warping or cracking.
The fuel filter style is the newer one and was probably replaced when the original one went south. Some of that style used vacuum or cable operated.. There is one other common style valve and that is just a single hose valve. IE just one hose is cut for the valve- not both.
The vacuum source for that valve is...... Vacuum line comes into the control switch. This line should have a check valve on it just above the switch. it goes to the TOP nipple on the switch. It leaves the bottom of the switch and goes out to the valve.
This vacuum is ONLY applied in "Vent" or "AC- ACMAX" positions.
Hope that helps clear things up
