Elastomeric bumpers

Hey everyone! Long time reader first time poster on The Nest. Is there any visual difference between elastomeric and steel rear bumpers besides being colored or not? I have never seen a true color keyed Road Runner in person but I've seen enough pictures to know that the front rubber bumpers can be distinguished by a "beak." Wondering if the stylists played with the back too.

Thanks for reading!

No they are the same as chrome ones only they have a coating of rubber over the steel and of course painted.[img]

Oh I see, thanks for the quick reply but that brings up another question; why are the front elastomeric bumper and the front steel bumper shaped differently? Is the front rubber bumper similar to the rear where it is a steel bumper coated or is it a complete rubber piece?

The front bumper is actually two pieces, the rubber coated steel piece which is basically the same as a chrome one, then there is a rubber piece (sometimes called an eyebrow) that bolts to the top of the steel piece. You can see this if you look close at the picture.

Thanks for the pictures ...I always wondered about the rear bumper being coated.
Question could you have ordered the front bumper painted and rear just standard chrome?

Found these build codes on another web site:
A21 Elastomeric Colored Front Bumper Package
A22 Elastomeric Colored Front & Rear Bumper Package

So i guess you could get just the front colored bumper if you wanted.

I think there have even been quite a few postings on ebay for the front rubber eyebrow-very expensive if I remember right. I've seen quite a few cars that only have the front bumper painted-don't know why though. I painted mine because I can't afford to rechrome them right now. Hopefully I will be able to chrome them after I graduate from college, because I would like to restore my car again, but take my time and make it look a little bit better. :D

That looks way better to me as well. We'll be working on buddy's RoadRunner right after we finished installing the new brake kit, maxxis truck tires and a couple of led light bars on the current Ram project. We'll definitely have the bumper painted.

Front bumper assembly from factory service manual.

Don't think I've ever seen a '71 Plymouth B-body with elastomeric bumper.
