72 RR Production numbers

Hi all,

I'm new to the site, and wanted to start out with a THANKS for hosting a great site for early 70's B - Bodies.

I recently purchased a 72 Roadrunner here in Canada, and it seems to me that this car is optioned in an odd way. I was wondering if you had any production figures on the 72 model year.

It is a GY9 Tawny Gold body with a partial white vinyl, and reflective roof strobe. (All paint, vinyl and stripes still original but badly weathered) The interior is gold and tan, with a bench seat column shift. It was imported to Canada from the US with a 400 big block with A/C, 14" magnum 500 wheels, front disc brakes, AM dual speaker radio, Ralleye guages, and light group options, rear window defrost, and no chrome exhaust tips :(

Here in Canada, nobody I talk to has ever seen a restored 71-2 GY9 Runner, let alone one that had vinyl and a roof strobe. (That said, I hvae seen quite a few Tawny Gold 71's on US sites such as your's)
Was this a rare option selection? Also, I'm wondering was it unusual for the Road Runner/Gtx line to have bench seats with column shift? Every one I have ever seen has had buckets with console shift. My other question was seatbelts. Was it normal in 72 to have black seatbelts(excluding the gold plastic that covers the belt at the floor), and coat hooks in a car with tan seats/headliner, and gold carpet? I think it looks horrible but if it is correct I will leave it alone.

The car was complete, and appeared unmolested in every way, except for the air cleaner, which I have since purchased. I am currently in the stripping and rust removal phase, and will be doing all work myself. The plan is to do the car as originally optioned, but not nessecarilly to exact specs.

Thanks lots in advance for any info you can provide, and keep up the great work. Oh, and we need some project updates! :)

Dave

Welcome to the Road Runner Nest.
PM or email me your fender tag numbers and I'll let you know what I can find.
One of our members here had their fathers original 72 RR in Tawny Gold with canopy vinyl top too ...also another member with a Tawny Gold RR with an Air Grabber.
Tawny Gold was the 8th most popular color for 72' RR's
Bench seat (both standard and Deluxe) were about 50% of production ...so buckets were 50%.
I'll post a few pictures I might have of GY9 71-72 RR's

Hi Dave, I too own a GY9 with a white full top, 71 GTX, it is a great color combo. Good luck with it.

I have been only able to find 1 other 71 GTX in Tawny Gold with a Full white Top and that one belonged to Bruce here on this site and he doesn't even have a picture of it, I wish he did.
I wish there was a breakdown for the 71 GTX colors with this combo "Tawny Gold with a Full white Top", I will bet there were very few and I will bet that mine may be the only 4 speed known.

Hi again,

This message is for Steve.

I scanned the tag from my Runner, and tried to email you from this forum. However, I couldn't find an easy way to attach the file without having my own image site. So.... here are the codes on the tag starting from top left.

H51 L31 M21 N23 N41 R11
V4W C(spaces here) 26 B51 C12 F11
GY9 C2Y3 GY9 225 C31723
E68 D34 RM23 P2R .......

I'd appreciate any info you can give me on this car. From my first post, does anyone have any idea why my seat belts/coat hooks/shoulder belt retainer clips are all black when the rest of the interior is tan/gold. Was this done from factory?

The car is completely stripped, and I've begun cutting out rust now. I since found that a large part of the driver's quarter is made out of bondo(3-4 inches thick) due to a collision. Since these cars are a bit hard to come by out here, I'm probably going to have to fabricate a new panel. :(

Thanks again,

Dave

Just found out I was told the wrong info.
This car was not built in the States as previously thought, but built in Windsor, Ontario.

Thanks for the info!

I was at a Mopar show over the weekend with my 67 Satellite, and was checking with the guy who sold me the Runner. He knows where there is a rust free Satellite shell, and he is going to arrange to get me any of the damaged sheet metal I need.

 YAY!

The plan now is to work my butt off on it, so that I can be driving it next summer! There's nothing like going to a show and seeing lots of finished versions of the car you're building to motivate you.
